The narrators are fantastic.
The tone of the story is reminiscent of The Raven Boys (kind of dark, poetic cadence etc.) and the story itself is very good. You want to keep reading, to find out what happens (even though you already have an idea).
My biggest issue with it is the writing style. This is the first book I've read from this author so I don't know if it's something that happens in all of her books but it's insanely distracting and left me feeling anxious. She repeats words over and over in succession.
"Rip. Rip, rip."
"Rustle leaves, rustle rustle."
Etc etc etc
It's throughout the entire book and only once (during some kind of manic inner dialogue) did it seem to fit. The rest of the time I kept inwardly groaning or finishing the sentence for the characters and wondering why the editor didn't suggest she tone it down.
The characters are wonderfully dimensional though so through so I kept the 4 stars instead of my initial 3.

I walk when I listen to audiobooks, and I had to keep on walking to get to the end of this compelling story. The excellent performances added to the intensity of the tale. Michael Crouch was perfect as Midnight, the young boy caught in the middle. The female narrators also captured the mystery of Wink and the cattiness of Poppy.
