Story
This book was first published in 1996 under the title Rider on the Storm and Other Bits of Barrett. It was a one-off book that got under the radar and a lot of Robert G. Barrett's readers weren't aware of it. Fifteen years later, to mark the 25th anniversary of the first Les Norton novel, this collection is being republished. It's the original stories re-edited, as well as some classic articles and columns on a range of subjects such as publishing, fame, dates, and the dole. Plus two brand new Les Norton short stories and a feature article, "Bowling for Bukowski".

Story
It’s 2006, and terror scaremongering in the media has rattled the residents of sleepy, suburban Dunlop Crescent. When a Maori family moves into number 14, the local cranks assume they are Middle Eastern terrorists hell-bent on destroying the Australian way of life. Rumour has it that they plan to turn their house to face Mecca. This sets off an extraordinary chain of events that embroils the entire neighbourhood as well as cynical media figures, bumbling antiterrorist police and a gang of white supremacists with a radical plan to wake up the country and ‘preserve Australian values’.

Publisher's Summary
Les Norton, a big red-headed country boy from Queensland, has just arrived in the big smoke and is set to make his mark. Working as a bouncer at an illegal casino in the Cross, Les encounters a number of fascinating characters who make up the seamier side of one of the most exciting cities in the world – gamblers, conmen, bookies, bouncers, hookers, and hit men, who ply their respective trades from the golden sands of Bondi to the tainted gutters of Kings Cross... usually on the wrong side of the law.

horrifying. despicable "entertainment" for psychos
If like me, you enjoyed the series that aired on the ABC, about a lovable rogue with a good dash of Aussie larrikin humour - AVOID the books at all costs!!
I am an avid reader and in my 53 years have read thousands of books of all genres. This is the WORST book I have EVER come across.
It sickeningly attempts to heroise a violent murderer, who escapes the law and flees to Sydney, where he and his cronies regularly sadistically bash, torture and all but kill an endless parade of victims. Each incident lovingly described in such graphic, grossly detailed gore, that only truly deranged individuals could enjoy.
This behaviour will no doubt, be defended by the author and fans as justifiable, as most of the "victims" are varying degrees of obnoxity themselves, and therefore "asking for it".
Even the women who Les gleefully lays into, usually because they were accompanying said obnoxious males, or God forbid, dared to open their mouths to our hero Les, who feels justified bashing them because of "equal rights for women". He also threatens to rape one, but then decides to kick her instead because he doesn't want to risk catching an STD from her. It can only be concluded that Les is a rapist whenever it does suit him.
He also regularly enjoys tortuing his neighbour's dog in the most horrendously sickening ways, before allowing his (equally demented) brother's bull terrier to tear it to pieces (which are then eaten by the both the dog and its owner).
Of course lovingly described in gory detail by this evil author. We are supposed to find this funny, and accept that this is how real men behaved in the 1980s.
All those sadly deluded that these books represent "true Aussie males" of a bygone era need their heads read.
The author, anyone who enjoys these books, or rated them highly should probably be locked up themselves, indefinitely.
Shame on the ABC for whitewashing the rivers of blood, and shame on audible - I wish I hadn't wasted my money support disturbing trash like this.

Should not have been re-released
This book is just awful. Simplistic storylines and narrative that excuse violence. The fact that this book was popular in the 80s says a lot about our society at the time. This book has no redeeming features.

Not sure I should have gone back
These books were great as a teenager in the 90's. Unfortunately they haven't aged well. Sexism, racism, unnecessary violence, and downright bad writing shine through. I feel for the narrator having to read these out loud.
There are still a few chuckles hidden here and there, but I don't think it was worth cringing through the rest to get to them.
Sorry Bobbie, I used to love these books.
