Publisher's Summary

Rosamunde Pilcher's captivating best seller of loss and the healing power of love.

Elfrida Phipps loves her new life in her pretty Hampshire village. She has a tiny cottage, her faithful dog, Horace, and the friendship of the neighbouring Blundells - particularly Oscar - to ensure that her days include companionship as well as independence. But an unforeseen tragedy upsets Elfrida's tranquillity: Oscar's wife and daughter are killed in a terrible car crash, and he finds himself homeless when his stepchildren claim their dead mother's inheritance.

Oscar and Elfrida take refuge in a rambling house in Scotland which becomes a magnet for various waifs and strays who converge upon it, including an unhappy teenage girl. It could be a recipe for disaster. But somehow the Christmas season weaves its magical spell, and for Elfrida and Oscar, in the evening of their lives, the winter solstice brings love and solace.

A lovely, cosy rendition of a seasonal story

I reread this book in hard copy every Christmas. Jilly Bond does a good job on it, reading it in a sweet and cosy way that suits Rosamunde Pilcher's style well. The character voices varied - some didn't sound at all how I imagined them, and sounded slightly exaggerated (especially Oscar and Mrs Snead). But others, like Sam, were truly impressive - she managed to convey a mixture of a Yorkshire and American accent exceptionally well. I know I'm probably being picky and I could never do those accents half as well! All in all, a delightful listen.

Great book!

I loved this story, it felt full and complete. The narrator was a bit off putting, her reading of the characters was stilted and fake sounding but overall a great read

comforting

Having read most of Pilcher's novels years ago, I thought to try a more recent publication on Audible. With the wonderful narrator Jilly Bond creating the atmosphere of rural idylls, the whole thing was thoroughly enjoyable.

Great Rosamund read

A lovely story with characters you don’t want to say goodbye to at the end, wishing there was a continuation … part 2. Rosamund weaves it all together beautifully into a heartwarming story.

Enchanting

Loved the characters, the story, the ending, although I wish it had gone even longer.

My favourite Christmas book

I’ve always loved Winter Solstice and have read it every Christmas since it was first released. Now I absolutely love this Audible version. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It’s a wonderful story and for me, it wouldn’t be Christmas without it.

Good story which can be listened to more than once

The narrator lets it down a bit, but apart from that, its really good listening!
