Publisher's Summary
DCI Jim Daley is sent from the city to investigate a murder after the body of a woman is washed up on an idyllic beach on the West Coast of Scotland. Far away from urban resources, he finds himself a stranger in a close-knit community.
Love, betrayal, fear and death stalk the small town, as Daley investigates a case that becomes more deadly than he could possibly imagine, in this compelling Scottish crime novel infused with intrigue and dark humour.
Denzil Meyrick was born in Glasgow and brought up in Campbeltown. After studying politics, he pursued a varied career including time spent as a police officer, freelance journalist, and director of several companies.
Beginning with Whisky from Small Glasses, The Last Witness and Dark Suits and Sad Songs, the DCI Daley series have all become Scottish Crime best sellers, with all three entering the Kindle top 10.
Whisky from Small Glasses reached number two in the store in the summer of 2015.

Enjoyable
When the body of a young woman is washed up on an idyllic beach on the west coast of Scotland, D.C.I. Jim Daley is despatched from Glasgow to lead the investigation. Great setting and characters but at times a little predictable. Over all a good listen.

Not bad for the first in a series
This is not a bad effort for the first book in a series. It feels a bit like the pilot of a TV series, with some of the exposition being a little forced and clunky, and the characters and setting haven't yet settled in the author's mind as yet. I didn't find the murder mystery very gripping and I haven't yet "discovered" what makes Daley unique and interesting as a protagonist, but I'll give another one in the series a go.
The performance is good, bringing some characters to life, but hasn't quite found Daley's "voice" yet either. Again, for a first outing it's not bad.

couldn't stop listening
I really enjoyed this book and the narrator. It put me a bit in mind of the Rebus books by Ian Rankin. Bit of a twist at the end so can't wait to read the next book.

The characters were interesting, I loved the descriptions of the scenery. I love David Monteath's narration. The story was just a bit slow at times

A riveting Scottish mystery but not perfect
I loved the characters and the narration but somehow tying the ends together at the end went wrong and lacked credibility/appropriate explanation. This is always a disappointment and happens when the author tries to drag out the suspense or tries to be just too clever. The latter seems to be the problem here. I won't be a spoiler and explain what and why, because it is a small glitch that might well be overlooked by a more casual reader. It was still a great read and I am keen to begin Book Number 2.
On that note, it is a shame that Audible reviews from subscribers are not recognised as "verified purchasers" for reviews on Amazon when more of us are turning to listening rather than reading the printed page as we spend so much time driving. The narrator is just as important as the author in this medium.

Why are so few stars?
This is at least a 10 out of 10 production. The good news is there are another 12 books in the series.
