Publisher's Summary

As the Second World War nears its end, a man is stabbed to death on the shoreline of Kinloch, in the shadow of the great warships in the harbour. Many years later the postman on Gairsay, a tiny island off the coast of Kintyre, discovers that the Bremner family are missing from their farm. There's a pot on the stove and food on the table, but of the Bremners there is no sign.

When DCI Daley comes into possession of a journal written by his wartime predecessor in Kinloch, Inspector William Urquhart, he soon realises that the Isle of Gairsay has many secrets. Assisted by his indomitable deputy, DS Brian Scott, and new boss, Chief Superintendent Carrie Symington, Daley must solve a wartime murder to uncover the shocking events of the past and the present.

Fascinating history of aspects of WWII.

Loved the story - full of suspense and intrigue with Jim Daley and his henchman Scott. Introduced us to a new player; farewelled Jim's love interest and hopefully well rid of the errant wife, Liz.
The only difficult point was the narrator. Whilst he does a great job getting his tongue around numerous & varied accents, I would really appreciate it if he made pauses between various sections just a little longer so that the listener can recognise the changes - especially when going from present to past & vice versa.
But a great , informative story!

Great series

The Daley Scott series is more than your average police mystery. Very enjoyable. Denzil Myrick.

Disappointing - Too many loose ends for fiction

Rather disappointed with the book ending so abruptly, leaving so many unanswered questions. If this was true crime, or genuine history, unanswered questions are expected. Not in a fiction novel however.

A return to form

After the far fetched and rather farcical twists of The Rat Stone Serenade, I found this a welcome return to form. Great story wonderfully performed.

Excellent once more

Another riveting listen
Getting to know the characters, West coastal Scotland and policing’s interdepartmental interplays throughout ever changing plot twists has been compelling listening
I’ll be back for more!

awful

Up till know I have more than enjoyed his books , this one however is hard to follow, discombobulated and not the slightest bit interesting and to to long. shame really I'm always looking for an ongoing series he spoilt that with this book.

Denzil rocks!

Another fantastic convoluted tale with old fashioned heroes and villains rocking the modern world. DCI Daley just gets more complicated with each story
