Story
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Publisher's Summary
After bursting onto the fantasy scene with his acclaimed debut novel, Elantris, and following up with his blockbuster Mistborn trilogy, Brandon Sanderson proves again that he is today's leading master of what Tolkien called 'secondary creation', the invention of whole worlds, complete with magics and myths all their own.
Warbreaker is the story of two sisters who happen to be princesses, the God King one of them has to marry, the lesser god who doesn't like his job, and the immortal who's still trying to undo the mistakes he made hundreds of years ago. Their world is one in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren's capital city and where a power known as BioChromatic magic is based on an essence known as breath that can be collected only one unit at a time from individual people.
By using breath and drawing upon the colour in everyday objects, all manner of miracles and mischief can be accomplished. It will take considerable quantities of each to resolve all the challenges facing Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris; Susebron, the God King; Lightsong, reluctant god of bravery; and mysterious Vasher, the Warbreaker.

Excellent reader, excellent story
This book exemplifies the many reasons I love Sanderson. His deft and almost effortless characterisation of strong and diverse female characters, his story telling ability, his humour. The book is a mystery novel wrapped in a fantasy, set in a vivid, bright, dynamic environment. In addition, Alyssa Bresnahan brings it to life in the best of ways.
Highly recommend, especially for those who loved Elantris.

A far cry from Mistborn
I read this after reading Wheel of Time, Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive which, to be fair, are a hard act to follow. If you're a fan of the Tide Lords series by Jennifer Fallon, you might enjoy this. Regrettably the narrator has a very limited range, and the conclusion of the story left me scratching my head. This audio book was a slog, but I understand that it's ten years old and he's written some absolute gold since this.

Good story, but not as good as his others
Brandon is one of my favourite authors and I thoroughly enjoy his books. This book has a unique and interesting magic system, as always with a Sanderson novel, but I felt this story lacked a little ‘something’. Still well worth a read though. Some of the characters went on an interesting journey and there are a few twists and turns to keep things interesting.

Fantastic Story, Limited voices
Loved the story Sanderson really knows how to write a great tale, the narration was well done but the range of voices was limited to ~3 different voices.

struggled
I listened to the first few chapters a couple of times but finally gave up. I know other books by the same author are slow to rev ... this one didn't get beyond neutral.

Garbage voice performance
Either they used pre-recorded segments for a bunch of it, or AI. The parts that didn’t have characters talking were extremely robotic and didn’t flow with the rest of the narration. It was a terrible experience and I will avoid this narrator in future

Good in the end
Took me a while to actually get into this one honestly because of the narrator. After listening to Michael Kramer voice Mistborn it was a hard act to follow. BUT... I did end up liking the story enough to overlook it. I would listen again

An amazing story and incredible world!
Having recently read Elantris, I was not sure what to expect. I found Elantris interesting, but not as well written as Brandon’s later works. So when I started this, my expectations were not high. But what an incredible cosmere world and magic system! I loved the story, which was more complex than I was expecting, and the narrator did a beautiful job. I am now inspired to start listening to more of Brandon’s work aside from the Stormlight Archive which I already adore! Highly recommend!
