Publisher's Summary

The year is 1546.

Europe lives in fear of the powerful Islamic empire to the East. Under its charismatic Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, it is an empire on the rise. It has defeated Christian fleets. It has conquered Christian cities.

Then the Sultan sends out an invitation to every king in Europe: send forth your champion to compete in a tournament unlike any other.

We follow the English delegation, selected by King Henry VIII himself, to the glittering city of Constantinople, where the most amazing tournament ever staged will take place.

But when the stakes are this high, not everyone plays fair, and for our team of plucky English heroes, winning may not be the primary goal. As a series of barbaric murders take place, a more immediate goal might simply be staying alive …

Fact & Fiction

As with all Matthew Reilly stories he merges Fact with Fiction, a great paced novel set in Europe with some very famous cast members. Gives a very detailed insight into Queen Elizabeth 1st and the influences that affected her adult life. As always, the Author can't help himself in the action scenes as he manages to bring the scene to life and extract every emotion of the moment.

Great book

Different story line for Matthew Reilly but as always he does a great job of making it an easy interesting, exciting, and unexpected read /listen. The narrator was also great - she kept me engaged and was easy to listen to.

Excellent and engrossing story

Really enjoyed this story from start to finish. It’s style, content and construction were first class. Lucy Gaskell should be given great credit in the way she delivered the various characters. Mathew Reilly excelled himself in offering a different style of writing from the Jack West Jnr series. A very worthwhile and pleasurable read.

A brutally realistic tale of intrigue

Matthew Reilly is always good at sucking you in to his stories. They flow so well that it’s hard to put them down. This is quite a different style of story; for him, but, he nails it. It accurately captures the brutality of human lust, greed and pride, whilst creating a rich tapestry of intrigue. I greatly enjoyed this novel.

Different from previous MR books

The slow start had me worried but it is a different type of who-done-it story that grows.
Enjoyed the historical parts and the twists and turns in the plot.
Definitely a good ‘read’ - just be patient as it is NOT an action story like Scarecrow or Jack West Jnr stories - good in a different way!

Not sure why I kept reading.

There was way too much torrid sex going on. I liked the narrator. The storyline was predictable. There were some dramatic moments. I did enjoy imagining the unique places described in the book.

Not for me

My first Michael Reilly novel and I didn't like it. It seemed gratuitous and ridiculous at times.
