Publisher's Summary

Six years ago, Eoin "Striker" MacLean endured the greatest betrayal of his life, a disaster that led Robert the Bruce to a crushing defeat and left Eoin without the spirited woman who ruled his heart. Eoin knew that falling in love with Margaret MacDowell - his sworn enemy's daughter - was risky. He promised Bruce that he would keep his fiery bride in the dark about the elite Highland Guard, but he could not predict the dire consequences his secret would have on his young marriage. Nor could he foresee how surrendering to temptation would cripple Bruce's cause, forcing Eoin to blame his wife and himself for trusting her.

Now, as Bruce prepares to challenge the resistance's remaining strongholds, Eoin finally has his chance for revenge against the woman he once loved so fiercely and her entire clan. But when ferociously independent Margaret reveals a surprise that unites her with Eoin, neither of them will let their love go down without a fight. Contains mature themes.

The story is great the narrating less so.

Mr Ferguson's scot dude voices are fine.

the main character voice in this, Margaret he does so poorly it is truly heinous. he does Margaret a disservice as a character.

reading the eBook Margaret is a strong woman who really does repent for all past mistakes and is a competent and wise woman born, sadly out of her own choices.

spoiler alert

eoin and Margaret meet when she is 18 and he is 24. her mother is long dead and she has successfully been running her father's castle for several years. she is competent at many unladylike tasks and due to her many brothers, is a bit loud and uncouth.

eoin is proper and used to being in control. almost betrothed to an excellent woman he feels nothing for, he meets wild Maggie and falls for her.

they marry in secret and she is taken to his families enormous disapproval to eoins fathers castle. he leaves her for work the first week they arrive and comes back after five months. ... for a night. then leaves again, and Margaret is left in a castle where eoins family and clan hate her as shes now an evil McDougal and her clan is fighting against eoins.

he's torn, shes torn, she takes off, he finds her and she lets one secret slip.

7ish years later after thinking eoin dead, he returns to the bitch he feels betrayed him to murder her family as vengeance for the king, only, surprise, he left a little present in her womb last time he was in town and now has a five year old he knew nothing about.

eoin, so used to thinking of his hated and reviled ex wife as evil incarnate, he has to face his own demons and hers.

I really loved this book in the series. got a better look into the serious warrior in the highland guard. looking up past books for mentions of him, you get to see how he lived during their time apart.

does the past/present thing with much less annoyance than usual.

sex scenes are the usual in this series. not too much, but eoin and Maggie are practical people and so the will they won't they for most of the book isnt there. they get right down to it.

Excellent story

I loved listening to this story. Lots of twists and turns in the plot. Anthony does an excellent job of narration, especially the Scottish brogues. I hope audible makes other titles in this series available.
