Story
Born into service, 16-year-old Juliet Harper has always idolised her mother, Agnes. But Agnes is haunted by what could have been and the glamorous life she might have lived if she had stayed in Manchester rather than settling down in the Lancashire moorland with her husband. Life takes another unexpected turn when Juliet's father suddenly dies. Agnes' reputation as a seamstress leads to her being taken on by local landowners the Drysdales, where she is proud to work. But it will be a bumpy road for both of them as they settle in to their new lives.

Story
When Katja Heinz secures a job as a typist in Hamburg working for Doctor Viktor’s clinic, she doesn’t expect to be writing up top secret medical records. Doctor Viktor treated soldiers for PTSD at the end of the first world war – and one of the patients was none other than Adolf Hitler.... The notes in his possession declare Hitler unfit for office; exposing such a secret would destroy the Fuhrer's reputation, and perhaps even change the course of the war.

Beautiful
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a lovely journey through the years and as a sewer myself it resonated with me a lot. At first I found the female narration a bit quick but I soon got used to it. Utterly pleasant in every way.

A Slow Start
This book is something of a slow burn. It takes a while to come together and starts out as little more than a series of vignettes from different points in time. Eventually, the common theme - a 1911 Singer sewing machine - unites the disparate stories. A gentle story that is worthwhile in the end
