Publisher's Summary

A harrowing account of Afghanistan's notorious Pul-e-Charkhi prison, written by its longest-serving Western inmate.

Former soldier Rob Langdon was working as a security contractor in Afghanistan when he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death in a case that would have been ruled a clear miscarriage of justice in the British legal system. His sentence was commuted to 20 years in jail, and he served his time in Kabul's most notorious prison, Pul-e-Charkhi, described as the world's worst place to be a Westerner.

Rob was there for seven years, the longest sentence served by a Westerner since the fall of the Taliban, and every one of those 2,500 days was an act of extraordinary survival in a jail filled with Afghanistan's most dangerous extremists and murderers. In 2016, Robert was pardoned and returned to Australia. In this highly anticipated book, he talks about his experiences for the first time.

Worth the listen.

Excellent account of the ordeal faced by Rob during his time in an Afghan jail. Honestly worth the listen. It’s unreal.

Absolutely captivating

What a story! What a life! What a hard arse! Not many men have been carved from that stone especially in this modern world.

Unique story, no bullsh1t

Having served in Afghan, and retained some connections to that ancient and beautiful place, it never leaves me but the corruption and brutality of life there is beyond the comprehension of most people. Rob Langdon has done a great job of getting his unique and surreal experience across without any apology, fanfare or dramatic writing. It’s a book about a bloke who kills someone, with good reason, but he’s then plunged into hell by the Afghan system, and the fat westerners who have become part of the process. Nothing short of extraordinary. If you like very flowing and literary writing: not for you. If you like hearing true stories told straight up, swearing at all the places you’ll find it in any Aussie soldier; you won’t put it down. Best book I’ve read for ages

Determination and mindset

A great read about determination and mindset with a real gritty edge in a hostile insurgent war zone

Love the book . I worked with Rob in the army, and knowing what he's like, I've been asked plenty of times by civi mates if I believe the story is true. I believe it 100%. He is capable of everything in the story and more. I wouldn't be surprised if he skipped the bits that are more exciting because they are to unbelievable. There are some awesome stories about his time in the army and I was lucky to witness a few of them

An Enlightening Book.

At first I thought this was a book written by someone who always thought they were right & were ready to fight anyone who didn't agree with them. I think that over time Rob has grown into a person who thinks before reacting & that has helped him become the person he is today. I take my hat off to him for having survived seven years in conditions that most people would not have been able to survive in. I wish him all the luck in the world.

Truly amazing

Rob's story is absolutely remarkable. I'm sure he will hate the comparison, but it's not too dissimilar to Victor Frankils saga in WW2.
A solid representation of what the mind and then body can endure.
The narrator is easy to listen to for an Aussie.
