Publisher's Summary

Darren has two big talents: cricket and trouble. It is no surprise, then, that he becomes an Australian sporting star of the bad-boy variety - one of those men who's always got away with things and just keeps going...until the day we meet him, middle aged and in the boot of a car, and everything pointing towards a shallow grave.

Gripping suspense from the Ned Kelly Award-winning author of Quota.

Not for the squeamish

I won't finish this book about unpleasant people doing unpleasant things to each other very nastily.

Promising start to innings ended disappointingly by treading on own stumps

Enjoyed the cricket yarn along the way but the story lost credibility as it raced to an unconvincing denouement and i’m left with a distaste for each of the main characters or rather caricatures.

Great Narrator

As usual an audio book is made or broken with its narration. Rupert Degas doesn't disappoint keeping the suspense going right to the very end.

Deeply flawed characters and a killer ending.

Clever writing and the choice of narrator made this a great listening experience. And you don’t need to be a cricket tragic to fully appreciate the authors cricket knowledge.
I wasn’t expecting that ending!
Thank you for making it this months Editors Choice because I would not have chosen it myself.

I LOVE THIS NARRATOR

I must say I know absolutely nothing about cricket and I zoned out when the story was all about cricket. The rest of the story is entertaining BUT I absolutely love the narrator Rupert. I will listen to anything he narrates he puts life into the story. The book was worth listening to just to hear him read it.

Really enjoyable

The narration was very expressive. I thought that the way the author wove the interaction between the family around the game of backyard cricket was very ingenious. A really enjoyable listening experience.
