Story
For more than 150 years, a grand house known as Alden Castle has stood proudly in the rolling hills of California's wine country, home to a family weighed down by secrets and debt. When the castle is sold, billionaire developers move in, only to discover one skeleton after another—including a fresh corpse—rotting in the old family cemetery. As three generations of the well-respected Alden-Stowe family come under scrutiny, police unearth a twisted web of rivalries, alliances, deceit, and treachery. Who lied? Who will survive? Who, amid all the horror and betrayal, is the lucky one?

Story
Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions. In 1982 Victorian police were called to a home on a housing estate an hour west of Melbourne. There, they found a five-year-old boy lying still and silent on the carpet. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but the child, Jacob, died the next day. The story made the headlines, and hundreds attended the funeral. Few people were surprised when the boy's mother and her boyfriend went to prison for the crime.

Since I discovered he’s being bullied by a classmate, I’ve spent every day worrying, my stomach churning with anxiety from the moment he leaves the house to the second he walks back through the door. Everyone keeps telling me I’m overreacting, but I won’t risk my child’s safety. My husband and I try to talk to the other boy’s parents, but it only makes things worse. Dolly Jamieson is not homeless, she's merely between permanent abodes. The 78-year-old spends her days keeping warm at the local library, where she enjoys sparring with the officious head librarian and helping herself to the free morning tea. It's not so bad, really. But it's certainly a far cry from the 1960s, when this humble girl from Geelong became an international star of the stage. As the acclaimed lead in the Broadway production of The Rose of France, all Dolly's dreams had come true. So how, in her old age, did she end up here?

Publisher's Summary
A compulsive and startling psychological thriller for fans of Girl on a Train and Gone Girl.
Loren Wynne-Estes appears to have it all: she's the girl from the wrong side of the tracks who's landed a handsome husband, a stunning home, a fleet of shiny cars and two beautiful daughters....
Then one day a fellow parent taps Loren on the shoulder outside the grand school gate, hands her a note...and suddenly everything's at stake.
Loren's Facebook-perfect marriage is spectacularly exposed--revealing an underbelly of lies and betrayal. What is uncovered will scandalise a small town, destroy lives, and leave a family divided.
But who is to be believed and who is to blame? Will the right person be brought to justice or is there one who got away?
"The One Who Got Away is the new Gone Girl and then some.... The twists and turns are masterful and the way she channels the voices of her characters is a dream to read. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Bring on the movie." (Mia Freedman)

Annoying narrator!
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. Whilst the story was okay the narrator drove me mad. Switching voices (badly) was quite distracting and I found it irritating.
Would you ever listen to anything by Caroline Overington again?
Perhaps.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Jennifer Vuletic?
I’m really not sure but not her.
Could you see The One Who Got Away being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
No.

There were some good twists and turns. A few holes in the storyline. Nice touch giving different tellers of the story throughout the book. Narrator’s performance with men’s and children voices was a bit annoying.

What a twist !!
Well I love this author & think I have read everything of hers on audible but I found this the hardest probably as it was American & the accent was a tad grinding but as usual the story was great & with such a twist I was glad I hung in there for the end but definitely not one of my favourites of hers.

Wow what a story!
I couldn't stop listening to find out what happened, which was a TOTALLY unexpected surprise! It would be far better in written form because of the absolutely horrendous male voices!!! Ear splitting, drawn out and exaggerated is not an overstatement for some of them...only made bearable by the storyline itself. I did feel the fine details of the husband's affair could've been shortened, his interview was a bit of an overstate in my opinion...I just wanted the main facts! I won't give my thoughts on the ending, not everything in life ends up how we think it should be 😎🤫😅
