Publisher's Summary

When this best-selling autobiography was originally released, everyone was shocked: The Long Hard Road Out of Hell was the darkest, funniest, most controversial and best-selling rock book of its time - and it became the template, both visually and narratively, for almost every rock book since. Marilyn Manson is not just a music icon, it turned out, but one of the best storytellers of his generation. Written with best-selling author Neil Strauss and modeled on Dante's Inferno, this edition of The Long Hard Road out of Hell features a bonus chapter not in the original book. In the shocking and candid memoir, Manson takes listeners from backstage to emergency rooms to jail cells, from the pit of despair to the top of the charts, and recounts his metamorphosis from a frightened Christian schoolboy into the most feared and revered music superstar in the country. Along the way you'll hear what happens to fans - and celebrities - who dare to venture backstage with the one of the world's most dangerous rock stars. In the words of Elle magazine, the book "makes Madonna's infamous Sex seem downright wholesome in comparison".

Urgh

I don’t know why I wasted my free monthly credit on this book. I’m actually more upset about the precious minutes of my life I will never get back. I was never really into Marilyn Manson, but I thought it might be interesting to learn about Brian Warner and his life. Turns out it’s a gratuitous waste of time, and I dislike him more now than when I knew very little about him.

5% interesting 60% boring 90% pretentious

Manson spends a whole section of the book relaying his dreams; perfect for insomniacs. While there is some evident charisma, Manson shoots for scary but ends up closer to a plastic Halloween pumpkin from a discount store.

Articulate and funny, at times disturbing.

Well written and insightful regarding the artists formative years, influences and early adulthood. The robotic style of narration detracted from the content at times. An updated version including his / their outlook on the world today would be an interesting read.

A must read

I decided to purchase this after hearing it being brutally criticised in a public forum. This book did not deserve the hate, but I think by getting it, it proved the very point it was aiming to make. This book is the equivalent of a validating hug for those in society who are completely misunderstood, unfairly treated and need to be shown they belong to a select group of intelligent and truly empathetic people. This book shows the truth, all of it. It is NOT for people who refuse to accept others have depth, variety of morals and can do things we don't agree with while still being a genuinely great person at the core.

well there's a credit i'll never get back

couldn't finish it. Not sure what was more annoying, the way brian warner (marilyn) chose to portray himself, or the guy they got to narrate this audio dribble. would sooner have stabbed myself in the ear with a stick than finish this book.. so confused how this has a 4 star rating
