Publisher's Summary

In Emily R. King's thrilling fantasy debut, an orphan girl blossoms into a warrior, summoning courage and confidence in her fearless quest to upend tradition, overthrow an empire, and reclaim her life as her own.

As an orphan ward of the Sisterhood in the ancient Tarachand Empire, eighteen-year-old Kalinda is destined for nothing more than a life of seclusion and prayer. Plagued by fevers, she's an unlikely candidate for even a servant's position, let alone a courtesan or wife. Her sole dream is to continue living in peace in the Sisterhood's mountain temple.

But a visit from the tyrant Rajah Tarek disrupts Kalinda's life. Within hours, she is ripped from the comfort of her home, set on a desert trek, and ordered to fight for her place among the rajah's ninety-nine wives and numerous courtesans. Her only solace comes in the company of her guard, the stoic but kind Captain Deven Naik.

Faced with the danger of a tournament to the death - and her growing affection for Deven - Kalinda has only one hope for escape, and it lies in an arcane, forbidden power buried within her.

One of my favourite series

Rarely do i listen to any books a second time but this is one such occasion, its one of my favourite series.

This book is filled with many really interesting, likeable and dislikeable characters and they are all really well described, even the enemies as is the setting. You can do easily picture their dress, their surroundings and their physical looks and the the story itself is really intriguing and kept me riveted every moment.

The narrator is fantastic at creating individual characters and giving them personality and come to think of it, this book lacks my pet peeve in this genre.

So often the lead female characters personality is extremely selfish, is super annoying because they whinge for no good reason and make completely stupid mistakes and never explain themselves or ask questions but that is NOT this book series. The female lead is strong, capable, intelligent and acts selflessly, always doing what's best for everyone that's important.

I highly recommend this entire series.

Interesting but predictable

I enjoyed the story line but the romance side of it was to cringy and predictable, the main story was great. It was also a wee bit childish, this book would have suited to be written in for an older read.

Enthralling

Loved this book - was the best fantasy story I’ve read in a long time. The author set the story up well and it evolved at a lovely pace. I loved the growth of the main character and the story behind the different factions. I even shed a tear at the end as it came to an emotional conclusion. I can’t wait to delve into book 2!

Loved it!

I really enjoyed this story, and am downloading the next one. I agree, a mans voice would add depth to the telling, but still loved it.

I think I could have liked this

But listening the that whiny voice was overtly frustrating. I can’t take the way her voice lulls up and down. She sounds likes she’s on the verge of tears consistently. Very annoying.

****Unputdownable, Amazing****

Emely R King style of writing reminds me of Sarah J Maas throne of glass series. It's a fantastical journey into a world dominated by men and women are either slaves, claimed wives or courtesan. It's a gripping fast paced story of a young girl trying to survive in a dangerous court of a cruel and corrupt Raja. I can't get enough and the five star rating I have is well deserved. Lauren Ezzo is brilliant in her narrative as Kalinda but I would have liked to have a separate male narrator.

Loved it

I wasn't sure if I'd like after reading a couple of the reviews, but I enjoyed it immensely, maybe some don't grasp the idea of character development. can't wait to read more in the series.
