Publisher's Summary

What did God use to draw a radical, committed unbeliever to himself? Did God take her to an evangelistic rally? Or, since she had her doctorate in literature, did he use something in print? No, God used an invitation to dinner in a modest home, from a humble couple who lived out the Gospel daily, simply, and authentically.

With this story of her conversion as a backdrop, Rosaria Butterfield invites us into her home to show us how God can use this same “radical, ordinary hospitality” to bring the Gospel to our lost friends and neighbors. Such hospitality sees our homes as not our own but as God’s tools for the furtherance of his kingdom as we welcome those who look, think, believe, and act differently from us into our everyday, sometimes messy lives - helping them see what true Christian faith really looks like.

Living out Theology

I had this book recommended to me by a trusted friend and I was nervous about reading it as I find it hard to read christian books. Finding it on Audible was a relief as I had some credits and nothing I wanted to read. I found myself challenged in a way I hadn't been since I was a young christian to live out my christian life. This book acknowledged the difficulty of doing one of the most underrated aspects of christian ministry, hospitality. In a world where Christian's no longer lead the way in acts of service and are either competing with government or benefactor funded social services; where we no longer lead the way in a virtuous life, hospitality should be the emphasis we latch onto to regain trust in our communities, renew our spiritual lives and submit to Christ's calling to love our neighbour. Radical, simple hospitality is neither cheap nor easy, but Rosaria shows us how she has made it the centre of her marriage and family. She addressed fears of serving untrustworthy people who may put our families at some kind of risk, forgiving and caring for difficult people who do not acknowledge their wrongs, and showed me that beans, soup and bread are just as rich for hospitality as a pricier feast. When this book finished, I felt I lost a friend and mentor. I look forward to reading more of her books.

Christian Hospitality - book 1

i enjoyed this for its scriptural content, convicting and encouraging stories, and how the author shared so much about her personal life of hospitality. it is given 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons. 1. her use of the words "this is an act of violence" was annoying and incorrect or at least a silly exaggeration in several places, and 2. it felt incomplete. only in the conclusion did she give any practical advice for beginning to show hospitality yourself, and it was not enough. regardless of these two things, this book is a worthy read. i would suggest reading this first, and then reading "life giving home" by Sally Clarkson for plenty of practical application help. paired together these books create a great complete picture of Christian hospitality. both the why, and the how.

Convicting, Inspiring, and Practical!

I wish every Christian would listen to or read this book! I loved how Rosaria not only fills each chapter with personal, motivational experience, but she also weaves Scripture throughout. I have been drawn to this idea of hospitality before, but Rosaria challenged me with difficult ideas that are necessary and realistic for radically ordinary hospitality. This book shares beautiful stories and evidence of God's grace in both broken and whole lives and families. Radically ordinary hospitality truly is missing in the church and Rosaria does a fantastic job of lighting the way and raising the standard. Grace filled and feel-good, this is a top-notch listen.

It was narrated well by the author

I struggled to finish this book. If I had been reading it on my own, I would have given up. I persevered because I was reading it chapter by chapter in a weekly group.
It was read well by the author and lovely to hear her song the songs she quoted in the book.

Excellent, accessible, compassionate &essential!

I would highly recommend this book for not only every question that every person on the planet to read. The call to hospitality is beautiful, sensitive, challenging and reassuring. The tone of the story is filled with love and compassion and free of judgement, yet full of discernment and wisdom and intelligence. It is the best dissertation on our current issues surrounding Christians dealing with the gay/lesbian/bi/transgender I’ve encountered-filled with both love and Biblical truth. If these issues fill you with nervousness re a lack of an adequate response that is real, compassionate, Biblical and perhaps something Jesus might say- read this book. Or if you are the parent or grandparent of a teenager or young person... Or a teenager or young person... or struggling with issues of sexuality, it’s essential that you read this book. I feel empowered to open my home and heart to people and live in love as I never have before.

A must for every believer

Rosaria’s daily walk of faith as portrayed in this book is real, challenging, and a call to all christians to practice everyday christian love with the people around us. My husband and I loved this book, even (or especially) when we found it hard to listen. A must-read for every believer.!
