Publisher's Summary

The Brave Athlete solves the 13 most common mental conundrums athletes face in their everyday training and in races. You don't have one brain - you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the civilized world, and your Computer brain that accesses your memories and runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for control all the time and that's when bad things happen; you get crazy nervous before a race, you choke under pressure, you quit when the going gets tough, you make dumb mistakes, you worry about how you look.

What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you don't want? What if you could feel confident, suffer like a hero, and handle any stress? You can.

The Brave Athlete from Dr. Simon Marshall and Lesley Paterson will help you take control of your brain so you can train harder, race faster, and better enjoy your sport.

Dr. Marshall is a sport psychology expert who trains the brains of elite professional athletes. Paterson is a three-time world champion triathlete and coach. Together, they offer this innovative brain training guide that is the first to draw from both clinical science and real-world experience with athletes.

To negative

I only got through the first 3 chapters, I just could not listen to any mor of “don’t be like this” “don’t think like that”
I think this book is really targeted at someone who has a low self esteem, little to non mental toughness and wants a kick start.

Brilliant book

Absolutely brilliant. Easy to listen, with a good balance of science based evidence and storytelling. Suitable for all levels of athletes, and even business owners too

unecesscary use of bad language

some of the themes and theories were quite interesting, however.. the use of foul language as an attempt to connect to the reader came off as immature and served no benefit, additionally, some parts eg. the section on impression management seemed unwise and had definitely didn't align with my idea on the technology or its purpose, the book quickly took a turn for me at this point as the dryness and attempted witt came off as spiteful, negative and unhelpful.

Amazing thank you

I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book as a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu “athlete” (hobbyist) competing at local tournaments.

Absolutely relatable and raw truths to competing in sports

Relatable to any sport and far surpasses any podcast, article, or any other motivational self development book, as it really dives deep into the mind of an athlete. The sequencing and logic of this book is perfect and gives the reader a great deal to take away and apply in real life scenarios. Thank you!

I have found the book I have been looking for! This audio has given me great strategies as a beginner athlete. it is reassuring to know that at all levels of competition, most people feel anxiety and pressure when performancing, though now I know how to find a place of calm before and during competition. Thank you so much for your insight 🙏 Brilliant!!!

Some great insight into the mind

I enjoyed this book and the narration. It focuses heavily on triathletes and their training but is valuable otherwise. I got some good tools that I can apply as an equine endurance athlete.

Sporty but adaptable to other areas

Loved this book. The humour also helps and the way complex topics like neuroscience are simplified.

I will listen to this one again.

A scientific but approachable book with loads of swearing

Lots of sound explanations on the mental side of triathlons and indeed life. At times it felt like the narrators were talking to you personally. It has spurred me on with my late in life foray into triathlon.

Let’s hope Tony paid back the $1500 and became Margaret.
