Publisher's Summary

In Victorian England, headstrong adventuress Elizabeth takes up her late father's quest for a rare, miraculous plant. She faces a perilous sea voyage, unforeseen dangers and treachery that threatens her entire family.

In present-day Australia, Anna finds a mysterious metal box containing a sketchbook of dazzling watercolours, a photograph inscribed 'Spring 1886' and a small bag of seeds. It sets her on a path far from her safe, carefully ordered life and on a journey that will force her to face her own demons.

In this spellbinding botanical odyssey of discovery, desire and deception, Kayte Nunn has so exquisitely researched 19th-century Cornwall and Chile you can almost smell the fragrance of the flowers, the touch of the flora on your fingertips....

"I was transported to the 1880s and Chile, to contemporary Sydney and Kew. A gripping, warm-hearted read." (Joy Rhoades, author of The Woolgrower's Companion

Slow to start but hang in there.....it's worth it

It was a slow book and I really struggled around the 5-6th chapter, however the story start to get better not long after that and it's a great ending. Definitely finishes with a bang!!

Just okay

This one was a struggle for me. I wanted to like it but ultimately I found it dreary and predictable. I had just finished 'Mrs Benson's Beetle' which was exciting and heartwarming. This novel is different and shouldn't be compared just because the subject matter is similar. I may come back to try again after a break.
The narrator is normally someone I like to listen to but she struggles with accents. I think this book would have been better with two narrators. Someone British for the past and Caroline Lee for the present.

A fantastic read!

Totally loved this book. I have it in print but needed to hear the audio so I could get some work done! This story really drags you in and you never know what's coming next.

Brilliant story and performance

One. Reading error, when Anna arrives in London , at the Airbnb, the reader calls her Elizabeth.
What a truely wonderfully crafted story. A book I had to hear from cover to cover, thus missing a nights sleep and a days work. Thanks for the enjoyment

The reader - Caroline Lee

I am always drawn to any audio book which has Caroline Lee reading. She brings the books to life.

Shocking English accent

Although I thoroughly enjoyed this book- the narrator list me every time she used an English accent. She managed to make every woman sound pompous, weak and whinging (not intentional I’m sure)- and every English man sounded stereotypically white, soft, weak, effete and incredibly unattractive- even as the story suggested the opposite! No “getting lost” in the narrative for me.

A great plot with many twists and turns.

Really enjoyed the Botanist’s Daughter. Caroline Lee smoothly moved from one character narrative to the next, giving the reader context of history and modern times. The story was heartfelt and heartbreaking at the same time. You never know what your ancestors truly endured and it was a great way to regard the historical and modern perspectives.

Most enjoyable and I could not put it down.
Wondering if there will be a next book following on from this one. I love the characters and the story is exciting too!
