Publisher's Summary

In the captivating start to a new, darkly lyrical fantasy series, Tea can raise the dead, but resurrection comes at a price.

When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she's a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.

In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha - one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles and make a powerful choice.

Not what I expected.

If you go in to this book prepared for a story about witchcraft, you will be sorely disappointed. Think more alone the lines of memoirs of a geisha.

The Bone Witch.

Oh dear. I didn't really know what to expect but I am disappointed. Not for me. I'm lost. Can't follow and a bit boring. I won't be finishing this one.

Did not finish

DNF at 50%. I tried to keep going but can’t push myself to continue. It’s written well but I’m not captured by the story. I get a lot of Memoirs of a Geisha vibes from the story, but instead of Geisha they are Ashas; witches. There’s so much info dumping, it’s all confusing. I had high hopes for this book. The performance wasn't enough to keep me going. Maybe on day I’ll pick it up again, but if I do, I won't be doing the audiobook.

Great listen interesting concepts in a fantasy/Gesha world

Was a great story would highly recommend. Very occasionally the reading was a bit muffled/mumbled but was in character. Looking forward to the next instalment.

I loved the present and future perspective!

The Worldbuilding was amazing.
The system of magic was fantastic.

The author loved
To describe the characters clothes. Sometimes over the top.

The best pet of this was seeing the main character in the
Future. I’ll read the next to see how she got to be this way.

great premise, but the writing lost me

take this with a grain of salt as i read a lot of fantasy and I have a strong aversion to certain tropes ie love triangles, village girl getting mind blown by big city, characters who exist to deliver lengthy exposition, heavy handed class allegories etc. This book has a great premise and I wanted to know where the story goes but the moment to moment story telling grated on me personally. the main character I think aimed for naive and curious but overshot and ended up sounding infantile. the voice actor sounded a bit too overwrought most of the time which I found distracting. but love the idea and would try another book by this author.

Great series

At first I thought it was going a bit slow, but because this is quite a unique world the write has created there is a lot of world building to be able to understand the story itself. That being said, the whole series is really good, you can't put it down.

Read the entire series!!! It’s excellent

The author spends a little time early on world building and also jumps into the heart glass law pretty quick but once that’s all explained the story really launches you into another world
It’s so excellent
I loved this series, the narration is also fantastic the 2 Narrators do a great job setting the scene for past and present
Absolutely loved this trilogy, I also really like that the author has a modern and therefore realistic character base,
Thanks Rin Chupeco for sharing your world

Memoirs of a Geisha with Magic

I really enjoyed the first act, and the final act. The middle felt as though it dragged on a bit and I found myself tuning out. It was still enjoyable, and the audio was entertaining (despite Tea being a bit whiny at times). It felt like Memoirs of a Geisha with Magic. The final act made me excited about what happens next.

Loved this

Being cast out by all around her at such a young age and unwelcome by those who used to be her friends
