Publisher's Summary

Welcome to Alderley, a magnificent mansion in the heart of the West Country where a grand house party is taking place. The preparations have been made, the guests have been invited, and the staff are on hand. What could possibly go wrong? Let the entertainment begin.

The theft of the diamond necklace and the antique pistols might all be explained, but the body in the lake - that really was a puzzle. 'Don't expect me to solve anything,' Inspector Wilkens announced modestly when he arrived to sort out the unpleasantness. And at a gathering that included English aristocracy, foreign agents in disguise, a ravishing baroness, a daring jewel thief, a Texas millionaire and, of course, the imperturbable butler, it was going to take some intricate sleuthing to uncover who killed whom and why.

Fun but confusing!

The reader is enthusiastic rather than accurate with his accents, but reads with enjoyable gusto and humour. The story is light and fun, although the number of characters and the structure of the crime makes it hard to follow. Go along for the ride, it’s quite enjoyable.

Great read

Loved it. The narrator is great! I especially liked his butler's voice. I highly recommend it.

Very entertaining and ingenious

This is a wonderful homage to the Golden Age country house murder mystery. It has a colourful cast of suspects and an abundance of baffling events. There is also quite a bit of humour and a totally surprising solution. Yes, it is extremely convoluted and utterly unrealistic but that's in keeping with the classic detective story puzzle, in which all the clues are there for the reader to join up if they are clever enough.

It is harder to keep everything straight in your head when listening rather than reading (I had to pause the story many times to think things through) but the compensation is Cornelius Garrett's expressive narration which clearly differentiated all the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will definitely listen to the others in the series.

funny as

it's a confusing story that took 2 listens to in order to work out all the different strings, but it was well worth it.
fantastically funny French farce with the gun. a classic summing up a la Miss Christie, a lugubrious inspector and an unexpected twist made this an exquisitely funny story with all the touches of the golden age of detective stories
