Publisher's Summary

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around - and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he's been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it.

Then a stunning opportunity presents itself in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever. What happened in Weep 200 years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving? The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries - including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo's dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? And if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times best-selling Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.

Amazing story... good narrator

What made the experience of listening to Strange the Dreamer the most enjoyable?

The story itself. Laini Taylor tells a story like no one I've read (some caliber as Brandon Sanderson) and she has earned a place among my most favorite authors of all time. The narrator also added a particular je ne sais quoi that was difficult to get used to at first (I think mostly because of the accent) but became endearing to me by the end.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot and characters - I feel like I know them and that Weep is just reachable beyond the horizon.

What about Steve West’s performance did you like?

He was really good at keeping tempo with what he was reading. It almost felt as if he lived and breathed what was happening, and I think I'll have a hard time going on to listening to someone else now that I am used to the way he speaks.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending - it brought tears to my eyes.

Vivid and imaginative

I found myself quickly intrigued by the story and main character. The story takes you on a wonderful adventure and I was constantly delighted by surprising directions the story takes. Everything I look for in a fantasy novel.

Good ideas, not so good execution

Wonderful ideas, interesting world, characters were all right but a little cartoony for a more serious book. The tone flip flopped however, and the characters did make silly decisions a lot which got a bit frustrating. Feel this story should have been one book rather than a series. Overall worth the read/listen though not sure if I will go on with the sequel.

Mesmerizing

I chose Laini Taylor for my first Audible experience and expected to be entertained. This book surpassed my expectations. The narrator has great energy. A bit funny when the narrator takes on a female timbre to his voice. But the story is so rich & exciting that it has eclipsed all else. Definitely worth my time and credit. Laini Taylor, thank you for this book.

Too Wordy

The story plot and narration is enjoyable, however the description of certain actions or feelings can get a bit wordy and repetitive. I didn't really enjoy the dream chapters either since they were all just... well, dreams and not real.

The story could've definitely been shorter imo. But I will be purchasing the next book to see how the story plays out.
