Publisher's Summary

A naked woman in red high-heeled shoes is perched on the edge of Clifton Suspension Bridge with her back pressed to the safety fence, weeping into a mobile phone. Clinical psychologist Joseph O'Loughlin is only feet away, desperately trying to talk her down. She whispers, 'you don't understand,' and jumps.

Later, Joe has a visitor - the woman's teenage daughter, a runaway from boarding school. She refuses to believe that her mother would have jumped off the bridge - not only would she not commit suicide, she is terrified of heights.

Joe wants to believe her, but what would drive a woman to such a desperate act? Whose voice? What evil?

trigger warning needed

I was getting into this series but this book has put me right off. The scenes of child rape and mutilation was just too much. Add to that a heavy dose of misogyny and racism.

Too graphic

The story wasn't too bad, the graphic details towards children wasn't appreciated. Couldn't tell the difference with 2 of the main characters, so the narrator didn't do a very good job . Will try one more book with this author and if it isn't an improvement it will be 👎 thumbs down for me.

Describes how a percent will rape a 12yo

This is disgusting. I like Robotham and Shaun Barret but the a pevert on the phone to the girls mother describing how he will rape her 12 yo Daughter is sick and disgusting. The book should be BANNED!

On the edge of your seat!

At first I thought this story was going to follow a Hollywood plot - that's an unkind thing to say I know. But it soon become obvious this story was in a league of its own and I couldn't wait for every chance to listen to it. On the edge of your seat is a cliché, but it applies to this chilling and perplexing story. Shatter is an excellent book by Michael Robotham - I highly recommend it!

average and predictable

The first Michael Robotham I've read/listened to. It was fine. But not really my cup of tea. The flawed hero theme is getting really boring in crime thrillers.

Great story.

Don't let those low rated reviews turn you off this book as they almost did me, this is a great story and the narrator does a great job. I have listened to this series in order and I am really enjoying them so far. Yes some parts are hard and disturbing to listen to but they are only short, and this only adds to the emotions this book brings out in you.

Where the 2nd book lacked this one really took up the mantel. but I really couldn't help thinking of the Sith lord when listening to the reader.

Great book in a good series but faulty playback

Unfortunately chapters didn’t match up in playback & sync kept jumping around. Otherwise good book from a good series.

The whole complexity of the story

So exciting, brilliant complicated twists. So sad at the relationship but understand the reasons. Love Jo and Rouiz. Narrator best ever
