Publisher's Summary

A dark enchantment blights the land.

Agnieszka loves her village, set deep in a peaceful valley. But the nearby enchanted forest casts a shadow over her home. Many have been lost to the Wood, and none returns unchanged. The villagers depend on an ageless wizard, the Dragon, to protect them from the forest's dark magic. However, his help comes at a terrible price. One young village woman must serve him for 10 years, leaving all she values behind.

Agnieszka fears her dearest friend, Kasia, will be picked at the next choosing, for she's everything Agnieszka is not - beautiful, graceful and brave. Yet when the Dragon comes, it's not Kasia he takes.

Well written folklore fantasy

Folklore fantasy full of malevolent woods and powerful magic. Interesting twists in the plot and characters who develop and grow. Very enjoyable. Solid narration.

Brilliant new fairytale for grown-up tastes.

I was absolutely captivated by this story. Katy Sobey is a wonderful narrator, her range as far as character voices is remarkable (I am so thrilled that she's also voicing Naomi Novik's new book, Spinning Silver!). Naomi Novik has written her own version of the Beauty and the Beast story/Grimm fairytale - complete with the dark and sometimes gruesome happenings, twists and surprises of those classic fables that keep you on the edge of your seat. I can't praise this book enough. Loved it.

Deeply engaging stand-alone fantasy

Lovely story, with a fascinating and very sinister baddie in the form of an entire evil forest! Feels like a Russian fairytale (as it is meant to) and the pace is brisk and exciting. A real pleasure.

A good twist on fantasy tropes

It's refreshing to find a heroine in a fantasy story that is actually afraid of magic and has all the limited worldly knowledge of her peasant upbringing. The forest was a horrific looming, presence over the whole novel, and a wonderful antagonistic force that that protagonists struggle to contend with. With interesting and well developed side characters, this was a great read.

Classic wizards and forests.

Classic wizard's apprentice story with a few nice twists and laughs. The first third is amazing. Goes through several climaxes, feeling a bit like a trilogy in one book.

And of all the books you just happened to pick up...

delightful

This is a delightful story full of twists (many of which are unexpected) steeped in folklore. Katy Soby did a fantastic job as the narrator. she has a very pleasant, appropriately animated voice.

Absolutely loved it!

This book was amazing!! The world was enchanting and eerie, the characters were well developed, and the plot was engaging.
Firstly, I really loved the atmosphere. The eastern European fairytale-type setting was enchanting and I loved the sinister, sentient vibe of the woods. The magic system is really well explained, but isn’t very complicated. The juxtaposition of the well-defined magic against the more intuitive earth magic was really interesting to me.
I loved the pacing of this book. I never felt bored or like the story was too rushed.
The characters were very well developed. The friendship between Kasia and Agnieszka was so strong and supportive. I loved them so much and I would love to see more friendships like theirs. I also really liked the development of the relationship between Agnieszka and the Dragon.
This book won’t be for everyone, it isn’t fast paced and the magic system isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I just got so invested in everything.
All in all, I loved this book so much and will be picking up more from Naomi Novik very soon.

A beautiful fairytale

Really enjoyed every second of this, and the narrator was wonderful. A fairytale for adults, I loved the magic of it.

Couldn’t put it down

Beautifully read. Got lost in the story. Unexpected turns, some predictable bits but that’s not a bad thing. What a talented writer.
