Publisher's Summary
In a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic, Tyen, a student of archaeology, unearths a sentient book called Vella. Once a young sorcerer-bookbinder, Vella was transformed into a useful tool by one of the greatest sorcerers of history. Since then she has been collecting information, including a vital clue to the disaster Tyen’s world faces.Elsewhere, in an land ruled by priests, Rielle the dyer’s daughter has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels. Yet she knows she has a talent for it, and that there is a corrupter in the city willing to teach her how to use it – should she dare to risk the Angels’ wrath.Yet not everything is as Tyen and Rielle have been raised to believe. Not the nature of magic, nor the laws of their lands… and not even the people they trust.

Great fun
Very imaginative story and good narrators. Audio books are fabulous. I can enjoy books while gardening or doing housework. Trudi is a reliable author. I know her stories will capture me and give me hours of enthralling reading, and listening. Highly recommend this one!

Not a complete book.
Well written, but only buy it if you’re willing to buy the series. It’s a cliffhanger finish. Boo.

there's more than enough
patriarchy in the real world, I don't want it in fantasy worlds as well! :-(

Enjoyable overall. Good story. Average narration.
Fun book with 2 parallel stories unfolding via alternating book parts. Really nice idea. Neither narrater really impressed me but the male narrator was fairly solid throughout. He kept it fairly simple and was very clearly spoken if not a little bland at times. However, the narrator for the female story, although trying to put heart into it, changing up the accents and tones, fell a bit short of the mark. For example on occasions not switching the her accent back to the correct one in time for that characters line. Also at times an accent would slide around like she forgot what she was aiming for. This was at times a bit cringy and took away from the immersion. I don't want to seem cruel but this is what the review system is for. Hopefully in the sequels she improves through practice. To give her credit she was extremely clear and the volume level was very even throughout, which unfortunately cannot be said for all audiobooks. I thought about returning the book over these issues but decided the authors story alone was worth the asking price.

Great story let down by a stiff performance.
Not sure if it was the director, or just fresh talent to audiobooks, but the performances lacked a bit of heart, and it seemed like they were very careful to enunciate every word veeeerrrryyyy clearly, which stifles the flow and feel of what is otherwise a fantastic book. Not enough to totally ruin it, but enough to irk. Great story, very stiff performance.

Nothing Happens
I'm a fan of Trudis' Novice and Age of 5 books, thats why i bought this. But Im in chapter 5, and nothing happens. world building is there but barely, conversations with characters seem pointless, action and conflict are scarce, barely nothing to move the story forward. its all fluff. One chapter picked up, but the scene only lasted for like a few minutes then it ended and switched to another character. Its boring. hopefully audible would take this back.
also the 2nd narrator has the most annoying voice and accent. its ugly.

Great world
Trudi always creates wonderful new worlds to get completely lost in. I really enjoyed it being read by the two readers.
