Publisher's Summary

Ringil, the hero of the bloody slaughter at Gallows Gap, is a legend to all who don't know him and a twisted degenerate to those that do. A veteran of the wars against the lizards, he makes a living from telling credulous travellers of his exploits. Until one day he is pulled away from his life and into the depths of the Empire's slave trade. There, he will discover a secret infinitely more frightening than the trade in lives.

Archeth - pragmatist, cynic and engineer, the last of her race - is called from her work at the whim of the most powerful man in the Empire and sent to its farthest reaches to investigate a demonic incursion against the Empire's borders.

Egar Dragonbane, steppe-nomad and one-time fighter for the Empire, finds himself entangled in a small-town battle between common sense and religious fervour. But out in the wider world, there is something on the move far more alien than any of his tribe's petty gods.

Anti-social, anti-heroic, and decidedly irritated, all three of them are about to be sent unwillingly forth into a vicious, vigorous, and thoroughly unsuspecting fantasy world.

try hard...but not hard enough

it was likened to Joe Abercrombie...but it didnt even come close. it was more like the author was trying to copy Joes work and failed. i struggled to finish listening and if it was anyone else narrating i doubt i would've but simon always does a great job.

and all that man on man sex...just no.

Exceptional writing.

Modern fantasy at its best. Great writing, great characters. One of the best original fantasy series I have ever experienced. Read it or lose out on a fantastic dark and twisty experience. Highly recommended.

Really

Bored with this book. Characters are 2 dimensional, uninteresting, unlovable and very very boring. I know publishers are scrambling to push SJW ideas, but you still have to have a story and lovable characters.

Light but Heavy

I liked the complex characters but not really sure the story went anywhere. fight scenes were great - just enough detail without a blow by blow description. what was with the British and contrived Russian/eastern European accents? it's great to distinguish the character but this almost set the story in a Tolkien middle earth.

Trigger warning, a lot of detailed rape.

Although there is a lot of rape which very uncomfortable, the story is great and had great characters. Very dark and merciless.

Drawn out with no real story

Possibly the worst book in a while. Even 3/4 the way through there was no clear story line. Many scenes are poorly described and lack imagery to carry you into this world in contrast to the the graphic anal gang-rape scene and sexual innuendos throughout the book along with prolific use of profanities, When imagery is used well, it goes on too long, often not knowing what character or scene it is for and sometimes serves very little purpose. Not sure what the author was trying to achieve by this. The story telling is poor and clumsy while most of the characters are shallow and lack any substance or something you can have an affinity with. The narration was well done, as many of Simon Vance's are; however, due to the clumsy writing, you sometimes cant tell between the characters thoughts or dialogue. I wont even be completing the series as it is so poorly done.

Third time for this novel, first time via Audible

It just keeps getting better. Love the story, love the characters, on to the next story in the series.

Not a complete story - Just part one

Slightly unsatisfied with the ending. Left with the need to buy the next book for closure on the story. I was really starting to get into the characters. Just be aware that it is not really a story in itself. It's part of a story.

To much needless swearing

Im quite well versed in cursing, most people would probs agree i swear a bit too much, but hearing it in an audiobook based in a fantasy world just seems lazy. Theres plenty of other ways to get a point across. You have all the time in the world to come up with creative ways to avoid it. Makes the story feel cheap and lazily written.
