Publisher's Summary

Fans have described the trilogy as Game of Thrones meets The Three Musketeers.

When Soren is plucked from the streets and given a place at the prestigious academy of swordsmanship, he thinks his dream of being a great swordsman has become a possibility. However, with great intrigues unfolding all around him, Soren discovers that he is little more than a pawn to the ambitions of others.

As he is swept from high society into exile in foreign lands to escape those who see him as a threat, he must rely on a mysterious gift and the lessons learned at the academy if he hopes to survive in a society where disputes are settled with a sword.

Repetitive and weak

Great narrator and he is what convinced me to get these books but the writing was weak. The end of book two made me vomit in my mouth a bit.
The love story was under developed and unbelievable and the whole story felt cliched and repetitive. Sorry.

disappointed

I found it hard to listen to, not because of the narrator but because there was little to no in depth to the plot. it was just a little too straight forward and predictable. great idea for a story, but I just didn't like the lackluster detail and intrigue it was capable of.

It's an ok fantasy book, not brilliant but not bad

I read a lot of reviews before I hesitatingly read this book, It wasn't as bad as people made out it was. The characterisation wasn't great, we have an 18/19year old as the main character who acts and thinks like a child, he has a great natural ability but wouldn't hone his skills to perfection the way I would have liked he just won because of his speed which I found frustrating, there was definitely a lack of depth to the story and the characters overall, however...It was a fun and enjoyable adventure type of story, more like a fast flowing shallow stream than a deep moving river of a story. I enjoyed his time at the academy and the sword fighting, I liked his sword. If you take this journey try and be understanding with the main character Soren he is a little bit of a fool, a massive man child but he grew up in dire circumstances and survived early childhood trauma so cheer him on a bit instead of disliking him for all he isn't.

An Epic Tale of Adventure & Intrigue!

I really loved this trilogy. A well rounded story with the right amount of adventure, fantasy, intrigue, tragedy, romance & action! With an excellent story & plot as well as narration & performance.
Highly recommend. Would make an excellent movie!! :)

A lot of hours of mediocrity for one credit

The best thing about this is that you get 31 hours for one credit. 31 hours where this book was more enjoyable than sitting in silence in the car on the way to work, but by a narrow margin.

The narrator does a good job considering, but the world is unimaginative, the plot contrived and predictable. And the characters. All the characters are bland and one dimensional, I don't think I've ever cared less about a protagonist.

The prose is also bizarre. Chapters appear to end mid plot point, and then time skip forwards, there are plot points that are mentioned in the first few chapters and then never visited again.

If you want to put on a novel, listen to it for 31 hours in the background, and then forget it ever happened, this is the book for you. If you want to find a novel you'll enjoy, and that will be memorable, look elsewhere.
