Critic Reviews

“Dennis Taylor serves up a top-notch outer-space adventure…. Ray Porter’s narration is simply brilliant…. In addition to suspense, action, futuristic detail, and moments of comedy, the book brings a light, investigative touch to the question of what exactly human identity is.” (The Washington Post

Cardboard cutouts in space

I enjoyed the Bob series, which launched Taylor’s SF writing career. It was a great idea and the humour seemed to work well.
This is closer to earth and for some reason that brings out the author’s libertarianism, his small minded view of the world. He pictures a solar system where the Cold War continues and America is still winning. The world is run by men, mainly Americans.
The science is good with only a few “gimmes” to help things along. But the dialog, ouch.
Still i kept going through to the end so it must have interested me to some extent, but it’s narrow cultural scope made me wince.

I kept waiting for it to get better

I was waiting for the usual wit of Dennis but none came. this story had little potential and it felt like 2 or 3 other books I've listened to lately regurgitated without the good parts. No fun, little drama, unrealistic politics and a dull end. This is one series I will not be getting involved in.

Great audio book

A kind of Bobiverse/ proto molecule from the expanse mash up. Good use of sound effects for comm transmissions, etc. And a smattering of shiny pop references.

Roared through this book in a couple of days!

A book of two halves and both have you wondering, “how the hell is Taylor gonna resolve this?” A cracking read.

As usual, Ray Porter “brings it” and makes characters distinguishable and memorable.

Shout out to the Sound Mixer for the excellent difference in environs.
