Publisher's Summary

There is another 1985, somewhere in the could-have-been, where the Crimean war still rages, dodos are regenerated in home-cloning kits and everyone is deeply disappointed by the ending of 'Jane Eyre'.

In this world there are no jet-liners or computers, but there are policemen who can travel across time, a Welsh republic, a great interest in all things literary - and a woman called Thursday Next.

In this utterly original and wonderfully funny first novel, Fforde has created a fiesty, loveable heroine and a plot of such richness and ingenuity that it will take your breath away.

Critic Reviews

"What Fforde is pulling is a variation on the classic Monty Python gambit: the incongruous juxtaposition of low comedy and high erudition - this scam has not been pulled off with such off-hand finesse and manic verve since the Pythons shut up shop. The Eyre Affair is a silly book for smart people: postmodernism played as raw, howling farce." ( Independant)

Great fun!

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced, very funny & extremely well-read novel (wonderful voice acting, with multiple characters and even international accents) . Full to the brim with witty references to the classics of western literature. I can see why it was so highly recommended.

Misophonia Trigger Warning!

Book was great, I’ve read a few of this series and they are always fun. Decided to listen to this one because too busy to read hard copy, despite having it next to my bed for months.
Accents are good but MY GOD, the mouth sounds made this almost unbearable to listen to. Voice acting 101: move AWAY from the mic to swallow. Ripped my headphones off a few times and actually had to stop listening for fear of hearing THAT sound again. Ew Ew Ew!!! Probably won’t bother people who don’t mind those types of noises, but for anyone with misophonia -read the hard copy!

Interesting story, poor presentation

I did kind of like the concepts explored in this book but I did not like the reader or the writing of the book. The comedy seemed forced and did not suit my taste. It might have been a bit different if I had read this book however. The story its self is good.

Strange cross between Harry Potter, Star Trek and Carmen Sandiego

I listened to the whole text. At times it was interesting and irreverent with a bit of fun. But I found the mixed genre really didn't hit the mark. More often I was left perplexed.

Amazing!

A true stroke of genius, wonderfully performed. I will be getting into the next one immediately. especially if it is read by the same person.

Landon, ready?

the love interests of Landon is tacky. I think I expected too much from this book after reading the fourth bear ,this book is quite a letdown. not to say it's not good, it is .it's just not great

Refreshingly Different

Jasper Fforde’s first novel is refreshingly original and beautifully written. Really enjoyed it. My only criticism is that the narrator reads very quickly. I prefer to savor my books and prefer a slower pace. I suspect that’s a fault of the director or whoever briefed her. Apart from that, couldn’t fault it.
