THE SQUIRE OF GOTHOS
Yes, this is abridged. I normally stay away from abridged books, but face it, if you want to listen to any Star Trek, you have no choice. I also am a fan of Peter David. I am not sure, but I believe the latest movie Pan, is based on his novel Tigerheart. I could be wrong. If you are a fan of New Generation you will love this. If you are a fan of the original you will like this, if you are a fan of both, you will be ecstatic. If you are new to Star Trek, do not start here. You will be lost.
I BELIEVE HE SAID HIS NAME WAS WOLF?
This is much to do with the multiverse. We have Captain Picard and First Officer Picard, Beverly Crusher and Beverly Howard. A humanoid Data and a Android Data. Worf, leader of the Klingons and Worf, head of security. Troi is married to Riker, with a child and she is not married to Riker. Tashi Yar is head of security and not. Etc...Guinan is involved and in a small part so is Sulu.
Fans of the original Star Trek will recognize Trelane, The Squire of Gothos. This was always one of my favorite episodes. Trelane is still very immature, but has developed a lot more power under the tutelage of Q. (although I thought all Q were called Q?) Q is sick of the kid and so is the crew of the Enterprise. Anyways the book is fast moving and has a great plot. I am not sure, but I think there was a small reference to an episode called Charlie.
I have read the unabridged version and yes it is better, but this is all that is recorded. If you can get over the abridgement then I believe you will enjoy it. One of the things I believe you do miss, is that in the unabridged you meet top flight nurse Geordi La Forge. I don't think that is included in the abridgement. Buy this, listen and maybe it will wet your appetite to find the book in a used book store or buy it on Amazon.
The production is very well done and John de Lancie is superb.
Picard: KNOWLEDGE IS POWER
Trelane: POWER IS POWER

I used to have a audio cassette of the unabridged version and it was outstanding. This abridged version is terribly disappointing.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I wouldn't, simply because the adaptation from the original book is not done well.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Q. Q is the reason I bought this originally in Hardback, it's why I bought this audiobook. Q rules!
What about John de Lancie’s performance did you like?
Everything really. His whole performance was perfectly done and surprisingly his portrayal as Trelane was my favourite part of this. He was able to show a manic insanity in the character that I'd always had in my head when reading this one.
Could you see Star Trek, The Next Generation: Q-Squared (Adapted) being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
No, the simple reason being it is too far removed now from the continuity of the series. I could see it being redone for a new and complete audiobook with the whole cast of TNG, I'd love to hear Stewart, Dorn, Spiner, Frakes, McFadden, Sirtis and Burton giving life to the different versions of their characters in this one.
Any additional comments?
Too much was cut in the adaptation, background information about the series that a Trekkie would love to hear, the reason why a Q in the continuum would not be named Q and be called Trelane, the resolving of many character aspects that were left hanging without a real conclusion. If you're a Trekkie and have always wanted to see Q face off against Trelane then buy the book, you'll enjoy the interplay far more as the character are fully fleshed out and is one of the better portrayals of TNG put to paper.

Excellent narration but really intrusive and annoying sound effects and music. Disjointed story which I imagine would work far better as a TV episode. It's difficult to work out where you are and which version of the main characters you're listening to.
