Story
In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.”

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Different SciFi more life on a starship.
I liked it no action but it's a person building a career on a ship (which could just as easily been a age of sail setting). mostly it's about the personalities and habits of living there onboard. No blasters fights the action was trade based still interesting and enjoyable I will read the next one.

No conflict occurs
This book was okay, but there was no conflict at all. The protagonist, Ishmael, has to join a ship after his mother’s death and throws himself into learning everything he can about all of the jobs on board in the hopes of discovering what he wants to specialise in. He is a total Mary Sue - good at everything he does, impresses captain and crew at every turn, and helps his friend and the entire crew build up a lucrative trading scheme. That’s literally all that happens. There are no set-backs, no personnel conflict with crew or on stations, no disaster that puts Ishmael’s new knowledge and skills to the test. There’s LOTS of detail about what goods are worth and their price to space ratio. I listened to an hour of the next book that previewed at the and and it seemed like more of the same. It wasn’t badly written prose-wise, but since NOTHING happens, I found it pretty meh. I don’t think I’ll be picking up the second book in this series.
