Publisher's Summary

Since childhood Nila Carter has been made to spend every weekend at the family cabin. In her teenage years she believes it to be a prison; as an adult it becomes her sanctuary and means to survive.

When a mysterious outbreak occurs in India, Nila's brother, Bobby, a virologist with the CDC, places the family on a precautionary alert to be ready to bug out. Unlike anything he's ever seen, the rabies-like virus is not just deadly; it causes extreme violent behavior in those infected. Following her brother's advice, Nila begins to stockpile.

After months of preparing, just as it seems the virus is over, everything implodes, and Bobby tells his family to leave the city. With her family, Nila heads to the mountains and to her father's isolated land. There she is eventually joined by friends and strangers, all hoping to safely stay clear of the virus that grips the world. The plan is to wait until the virus burns out.

While there, the group forms a tight bond, feeling secure that they will beat the extinction event and in due course return home. As time moves on, Nila quickly learns there are things they cannot run from, and a virus is one of them. Despite how prepared they are, how secure the land, each day brings a new threat and a painful reality that not only is returning home a pipe dream, but the likelihood of all of them surviving is increasingly growing slim.

Great Story-Worth the Time!

Now I have finished listening this I am torn between reading the second in eBook or waiting in hopeful anticipation that the audible version will be released in Australia ASAP!
I enjoyed listening to this story so much that I listened as much as I could - in the shower, the bath, cooking dinner, making school lunches ect and before I knew it I was finished. So sad.
I will get the second book - the story compels me to find out what happened.

Poorly written and poorly executed

This book starts off faced pace and exciting but goes downhill very quickly. Poorly developed characters and an overdrawn plot focusing on minor detail not relevant to the story are the biggest misgivings.
As others have noted, the main character Nyles has the maturity level of a spoilt teenager and her behaviour and responses to various life or death situations is nonsensical. A main character doesn't have to be good or the perfect citizen to be liked (think Dexter). However, there is nothing redeemable about Nyles. Perhaps her character further develops as the series goes on (or the author improvea her writing...).
Aside from the poorly written characters, I found the plot to be predictable and not really going anywhere. I would describe this book as more of a zombie-drama than a thriller.
I felt the narrator didn't do justice for the story either and failed to provide a distinction between characters. She may as well have been reading a children's book as there was zero vibe that I was listening to a thriller or sense any fear or emotion in the characters "voices". I wish I stopped listening earlier on so I could have asked for my credit to be return but unfortunately, I had reached about half way point before I realised how bored I was.
Don't waste your time.

Frustrating and unsympathetic

The world itself isn’t bad it’s written fine enough, but the protagonist is incredibly hard to relate too, the book suffers from the complete opposite problem most zombie books suffer which is a far too competent and complete consequence free Mary sue character who is usually an annoying marine, instead you have a completely incompetent below average person who actively gets everyone around them killed and is objectively a terrible mother, and she nor anyone else ever brings that up, if you can get past that the story is just a run of the mill low detail zombie plot with no real goal in mind.

Barely 3 stars

Many plot holes, contradictions and silliness. Zero concept of infection control. Definitely not getting book 2

Excellent.

This isn't a run of the mill zombie apocalypse. Notably things there aren't any real 'bad guys' in it. In fact, that's what makes it so great. It's real, it's heart breaking, and it's filled with characters you will really come to respect as they navigate a nightmare. Just a really good story.

very boring srory and frustrating main female lead

I really tried to get through this. with 2 hours to go I just couldn't keep slogging though the interminable description of every movement and thought at the expense of any sort of progress in plot. they just hang around the cabin with the silly main character making stupid mistake after stupid mistake. and thinking boring thoughts. urrrghhhh. so much better apocalyptic fiction to choose from where stuff actually happens!!!!

I love this family!

This book grabbed me from the start. Great story line, rounded characters, and enough twists and turns to keep me engaged.
Very descriptive writing which provided an immersive experience.
The narrator was versatile and believable.
I'm heading straight for Book 2!

Don’t waste your time on this one

While the narrator did a reasonable job, the story itself was terrible. I love a good zombie book - it’s one of my favourite genres - however this book was so poorly written I would have assumed it was self published. The characters have no depth to them whatsoever and they constantly contradict themselves (in words and in actions). Things just seem to happen automatically with little or no build up. Stuff just magically appears or help magically arrives just in the nick of time. Don’t waste your time on this one.

Great end of days

I love a good apocalypse/end of days story, and this did not disappoint. Great characters, and easy to listen to storyline.
