Publisher's Summary

Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster's increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the orks massing in the Veridian system.

Without warning, their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine - Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all. As the traitors summon foul daemonic hosts and all the forces of Chaos, the Ultramarines are drawn into a grim and deadly struggle in which neither side can prevail.

Great.

I recommend reading/listening to this after First Heretic, which is also really good. As it adds just enough context to Lorgar and the Word Bearers to appreciate what's happening.

I love how the tone of the story changes as things become more chaotic.
It's a little difficult to follow some characters as it jumps around a bit. But it's got a lot going on, condensed into It's chapters that make it worth a go.

Incredible.

Truly incredible. A must have. The narrator was very good and certainly helped bring the intense atmosphere to life. A great story to listen to as an audio book from start to finish. Highly recommend.

Best Ultramarines

I think this book has the best presentation of Ultramarines and what they are/think like out of any warhammer book. They aren't generic space marines, they aren't goody twoshoes, they are ultramarines

The ultramarines resilience

Overall the book was good, however I feel there were some serious holes in the story, like how the entire shipyard and ships were caught unaware, that is a serious breach in protocol especially for a legion who follows it very seriously, secondly how a primarch can be put down by person who isn’t even a full space marine. In other books, primarch swat these marines around but because of plot armour, phaeron is spared?

Absolutely awesome

Do not listen to people who say that they lost track of the story. It is literally written in chronological order! I don’t understand how any functioning adult could lose track…

snooze fest

the performance is good as usual, however, even that could not save the storyline. this was such a boring story that only had a few good lines of dialogue, definitely skip. it makes the outcast dead look like a good book.

Lost track of the story

There were some great moments but the story just wasn't as good as some of the other books

Good but Jumps around alot.

Overall a good listen, do recommend. My only complaint is that it jumps around alot and it can be a bit jarring. The voice acting is well done but what is the fascination in this series with making Space Marines sound elderly? Most of them sound like they should be running a book shop in 1930s London, not a worrior in a grim dark universe (an issue with several books throughout this series, not just this one)

Was well written, but the story didn't flow.

I did enjoy the book but I wasn't enthralled in it as I have been with other books of the series.
