Story
Dirriken Friedel used his aristocratic connections to rescue his troops. He didn't plan on starting a war or killing them himself. Now he spends his days in jail, waiting for an assassin sent by his dead officers families to end his misery. When he's broken out by off-duty marines he has a chance to start over, if he's worthy. During his ramshackle escape he collects a broken-down trading ship, a bitter former army officer, a genetically altered religious fanatic, a runaway ingenue, a sham engineer, and a murderous femme fatale.

Story
It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Story
Geary believed in the Alliance. Even when he uncovered overwhelming evidence that the highest echelons of the government and fleet command were involved in secret programs and prison camps, he believed it was worth saving. He believed his duty was to see that justice was served even though some factions feared that revealing the truth would cause the Alliance to crumble. But after narrowly surviving two assassination attempts when he brings evidence of the misdeeds to the capital star system, Geary realizes that some want to get rid of him.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Publisher's Summary
The first interstellar war, a generation ago, left humanity enslaved. Now humans fight in the armies of their masters to save themselves from annihilation. At least, that's what the propaganda insists is true.
What the layers of lies keep hidden is how badly the new war is going for the people of earth. Now it's Dylan Kane's turn to blast into the heavens and join the battle, but what his masters don't know is that by putting a weapon in his hands, they're giving him the key to unlocking his hopes of freedom.
When the railgun slugs are tearing through his ship, and the vacuum is sucking the life out of his wounded friends, will Dylan's years of repressed rage turn into enough bravery to make his dream come true?

interesting first entry
An interesting first entry to the series, not the most riveting ending, but keen to see where it leads.

Very good
I listen to this book because I had a absolutely awesome Giggle and chuckle with Bobby Adair’s dustys diaries and his best performance Slow Burn .
This first book needs more attention with the characters as it’s sci-fi backdrop has you having to take note of a lot of what’s going on.
The narrator Greg does a fine job. With all the characters some of them female

Surprisingly entertaining
An interesting listen, enough to keep you entertained and a storyline that sometimes has you wondering what is really going on.
Good characters and tech jargon to explain future FTL.
Some will find it easy to like.

Nicely paced
I liked the narrative from Kane’s POV with enough personal insight to give you a good comfort level with him and enough action to keep the momentum going. Will be buying the next book in the series to see what happens next. The narrator was also easy to listen to as well

the series is okay at best
I think the biggest problem with this whole series is the main character is not likable at all and neither are most of the sub characters and the only reason we follow the main character is because we're told that that's who we're following. characters all along. blame him for everything. and it just doesn't feel like we should really root for him except that we should because he's the main hero per se. there was some good concepts in it but all in all there is much better series out there. sorry to say
