Story
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.”

Hackett, in his trusty ship the Perseus, is not just a space traveller—beginning his travels with an expedition to Neptune and back—but, thanks to the time-dilation effect, a time traveller as well. His new mission will take him to Andromeda, to get a close-up look at the constellation which will eventually crash into the Milky Way, and give humanity a heads-up about the challenges which are coming. A mission which will take him five million years to complete. Not only is Hackett exploring unknown space, but he will return to a vastly different time.

Publisher's Summary
From BSFA award-winning author Gareth L. Powell comes the first in a new epic sci-fi trilogy exploring the legacies of war.
The sentient warship Trouble Dog was built for violence, yet following a brutal war, she is disgusted by her role in a genocide. Stripped of her weaponry and seeking to atone, she joins the House of Reclamation, an organization dedicated to rescuing ships in distress. When a civilian ship goes missing in a disputed system, Trouble Dog and her new crew of loners, captained by Sal Konstanz, are sent on a rescue mission.
Meanwhile, light years away, intelligence officer Ashton Childe is tasked with locating the poet, Ona Sudak, who was aboard the missing spaceship. What Childe doesn't know is that Sudak is not the person she appears to be. A straightforward rescue turns into something far more dangerous, as Trouble Dog, Konstanz, and Childe find themselves at the center of a conflict that could engulf the entire galaxy. If she is to save her crew, Trouble Dog is going to have to remember how to fight ...

I tried.
I wanted to like this book, it started out okay but as the hours passed, I found I just didn't care. The author never made me like any of the characters so it made no difference to me whether they triumphed or not. I won't bother listening to the next book.

Based on the 3 hours I managed to get through
For starters I'm a big fan of sci-fi books, movies, etc. The warrior characters are woman, that includes the ship and of the two male characters one dies pretty quickly and the other is a truly pathetic mummys boy. I have no problem with bad arse woman characters, Alien, resident evil and many books I've read but by the looks of where it was heading out just put me off. The reader left a lot to be desired also.
I haven't given it ones as maybe one day I will go back and it may change further in although I wouldn't count on it.

Good listen
I liked the story and learning about the ship and how it functioned. Good story line and looking forward to the next one.
Found the start a bit confusing as it comes in quite hot but the story does come to light as it goes on (as stories should).
I think it’s worth a 5 star rating as it’s an engaging read.

Great story great narration
I listened to the narration at 1.5x speed and none of the Narrators share my accent of speaking English, and yet I found the narration was just fine.
If listeners cannot understand the Narrators at 1x they probably need their ears checked!

Terrible narration, good story.
Some of these readers have obviously been told to slow down before. Unfortunately, they seem incapable of doing so. Instead, they still spit each sentence out in an almost incomprehensible jumble, but draw the last word of every sentence out, like a tape recorder with the batteries going flat. It's very distracting, and means that slowing down the playback speed makes it sound worse.

Good story, narration a bit of a mixed bag
Really liked the story, good twists and backatory... characters fleshed out, maybe too many and the story too pacey to really get to like them though... suspect that'll come with later books...
Narration though was a bit of a mixed bag... female narrators sounded too much alike, made listening confusing at times...

a great story, masterfully told
An enjoyable sci fi romp with delicious teasing of the story to come. Relatable characters and good descriptions of technology at a good placement in the hard/soft sci fi intersection.
