Publisher's Summary

The much-anticipated final conclusion to the Fitz and the Fool trilogy.

Prince FitzChivalry Farseer's daughter, Bee, was violently abducted from Withywoods by Servants of the Four in their search for the Unexpected Son, foretold to wield great power. With Fitz in pursuit, the Servants fled through a Skill-pillar, leaving no trace. It seems certain that they and their young hostage have perished in the Skill-river.

Clerres, where White Prophets were trained by the Servants to set the world on a better path, has been corrupted by greed. Fitz is determined to reach the city and take vengeance on the Four, not only for the loss of Bee but also for their torture of the Fool. Accompanied by FitzVigilant, son of the assassin Chade; Chade's protégé, Spark; and the stableboy Perseverance, Bee's only friend, their journey will take them from the Elderling city of Kelsingra, down the perilous Rain Wild River and on to the Pirate Isles. Their mission for revenge will become a voyage of discovery as well as of reunions, transformations and heartrending shocks.

Startling answers to old mysteries are revealed. What became of the liveships Paragon and Vivacia and their crews? What is the origin of the Others and their eerie beach? How are liveships and dragons connected?

But Fitz and his followers are not the only ones with a deadly grudge against the Four. An ancient wrong will bring them unlikely and dangerous allies in their quest. And if the corrupt society of Clerres is to be brought down, Fitz and the Fool will have to make a series of profound and fateful sacrifices.

Critic Reviews

"Fantasy as it ought to be written...Hobb's books are like diamonds in a sea of zircons." (George R. R. Martin)
"Hobb is superb, spinning wonderful characters and plots from pure imagination." (Conn Iggulden)
"Robin Hobb's secret is not just the detail with which she depicts the Six Duchies world she has explored over 20 years...the feelings of anguish, ambiguity, fear and failure are as familiar as those in a novel by Jonathan Franzen." ( Independent)
"A little slice of heaven." ( Guardian)
"Hobb is one of the great modern fantasy writers...what makes her novels as addictive as morphine is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way her characters are compromised and manipulated by politics." ( The Times)

Lovely conclusion spoilt by male narrator

This was a lovey wrap up of all our old favourite characters. I cried, I laughed and I was annoyed.
David Thorpe pronounced Liveships, Liv-ships, throughout the entire book, jarring me out of the story every time.
He also did at terrible job of Nighteyes talking to Fitz, often not changing tone or cadence between them so that you weren’t sure who was speaking to who.
It also irritated me that Nighteyes kept calling Fitz, Fitz, instead of Changer or My Brother probably exacerbating my dislike of the way David Thorpe narrated the two of them.
Avita Jay was great, and the story was great. If I could split the star review between the two narrators I would give Avita 5 stars and David 1 star. It truely intruded on my enjoyment of this story that much.

I have listened to the entire series however I would highly recommend buying this book and reading it yourself rather than listening to this performance.

Make narrator seriously sucks

Why would you change the narrator on the final book and WHY would you pick this guy?? He’s bloody awful.

Amazing conclusion to this series!! I loved the story. It’s just a shame the narrator made everyone sound loud & drunk

Great conclusion, frustrated by narration

It’s a shame the narration through the 16 books wasn’t more consistent. At least for the Fitz books. So many changes in tempo, style, accents, pronunciations. Lots of inconsistency of character came though the personality of each voice differing from the last.

Truly a great end to a riveting story

Spanning 3 trilogies this final instalment picks up the twists and turns of the fates of Fitz and the Fool. Along the way many unanswered questions such as what happens to the liveships ( although the pronunciation of the narrator is liv-ship not live-ship which I initially found disconcerting) and the Elderlings , the dragons and their Magics. I was spellbound despite the 45hrs of this book

Wow what a conclusion

Take a bow Robin Hobb . The last book is nothing short of brilliant. I feel like I’ve been in the Six Dutchees for several months. Absolutely magnificent from beginning to end. And both narrators were wonderful. Great job all round.

Colossal, Epic Story.

Assassin's Fate is a truly wonderfully writen tale that started 9 books ago. A story of a bastard prince, a prescient jester and a wolf, who go on, to put the world on a better path.
This final installment lived up to all expectations. As far as conclusions go, this one was excellent. I was more than happy to see many characters make appearances and a lot of loose ends tied up, as Hobbs managed to combine and weave together some of her other tales.
