Publisher's Summary

The first two limbs of the eight-fold path of yoga sutras - the basic text for classical yoga - are examined in this spiritual guide to the practice of yoga. Foundational to all yogic thought, they are considered to be the guidelines to the yoga way of living that free individuals to take ownership of their lives, direct them toward the fulfillment they seek, and gain the skills to choose attitude, thought, and action.

The first five guidelines are referred to as the yamas - a Sanskrit word that translates to "restraints" - and encompass nonviolence, truthfulness, not stealing, nonexcess, and nonpossessiveness. The last five are referred to as the niyamas, or observances - purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, and surrender.

great overview but a little subjective

I loved the overview of yamas and niyamas but felt the narrative was overridden with person antecdotes and stories that made it hard, at times, to relate to.

Realistic and thought provoking examples that help you to understand each of the Yamas and NiYamas! Well read also, easy to follow and expressive 😊

Monotonous and shallow

Struggled to listen to the monotonous reader but eventually had to return the book.

Also, the book itself needs more editing. It went on and on about things superficially. I expect more depth from books on such topics.

Want to listen but can’t.

I love the content of this book but find the readers voice annoying...whispered and affected. Just because it is on yogic content doesn’t mean that the voice has to be this whispered and affected tone. It annoys me when I hear yoga teachers talk like this. It is not their natural voice when they then go to order a coffee at a cafe!! Not necessary! I am going to buy the book because I can’t finish listening to it!

Feminist Ranting

Very subjective, hardly sensed the yogi/truthfulness to it at all. Hard to listen to.
