Story
"What would it be like to see all as one?" Alan Watts asks. "We hear about attaining great states of consciousness. But the only way to have a real transformation is to stop thinking about it - and simply experience it." From the 1950s to the 1970s, this seminal teacher sparked the West's love for Eastern wisdom. Now, in these rare recorded gems, he inspires a new generation of inner explorers seeking deeper insights into meditation - its myriad forms, how they work, and what happens when we practice them.

Story
Deep down, most people think that happiness comes from having or doing something. Here, in Alan Watts’s groundbreaking third book (originally published in 1940), he offers a more challenging thesis: authentic happiness comes from embracing life as a whole in all its contradictions and paradoxes, an attitude that Watts calls the “way of acceptance.” Drawing on Eastern philosophy, Western mysticism, and analytic psychology, Watts demonstrates that happiness comes from accepting both the outer world around us and the inner world inside us,

Story
Space is considered to be nothingness by many. But after all it is the background in which we see everything. It is against space and within the dimension of time that we experience everything we experience. Space and time are the two basic dimensions of our world but are uncommonly illusive. We can say they are our way of thinking of the universe as being a system of patterns. And our awe at the vastness of space may be man's astonishment at himself.

Story
Alan Watts examines the problem of humans in a seemingly hostile universe in ways that question the social norms and illusions that bind and constrict modern humans. Marking a groundbreaking synthesis, Watts asserts that the powerful insights of Freud and Jung, which had, indeed, brought psychiatry close to the edge of liberation, could, if melded with the hitherto secret wisdom of the Eastern traditions, free people from their battles with the self.

Sometimes illumination occurs spontaneously or, as Ram Dass experienced, in a cosmic moment of the heart opening. More commonly, it happens when we remove the dust from the mirror of our spiritual heart with daily practice - to see beyond the illusion of our transient thoughts and emotions to the vast and luminous landscape of our true nature.

The Bhagavad Gita is a gem so precious in India's spiritual treasury that many regard it not as a volume of sacred verse, but as a living manifestation of the Divine. In the summer of 1974, inside a balmy Boulder, Colorado, warehouse that served as a main hall of a fledgling Naropa Institute, some say a minor miracle occured: The reawakening of the Gita's living presence, as it unfolded in a series of wisdom teachings led by Ram Dass.

Could be so much better
The lectures in this audio book are basically copied from material freely available elsewhere. Somebody has simply and randomly downloaded some of this material and presented it here. There has been no effort to edit the material into any sort of meaningful order. They have added a bit of “funky” guitar and a female narrator who introduces each section. Some of the sections in this audiobook just peter out, almost mid sentence. There is so much missing material here. It is a shame because the work of Alan Watts was truly significant. Many of his ideas still resonate today. If you want to study the social and cultural upheaval of the 1960’s you need to study this man and his writings. He was massively influential. His material also resonates very strongly with today’s Millenials who see in his philosophy a way of reshaping the political and social materialism that has ensnared their generation. If audible wish to cash in on the work of Alan Watts they need to at least re-edit the material and remove the infamous background noise of watts’ lapel microphone. They should also pay an editor to put the material into some kind of thematic order. Finally, Watts actually wrote several books as well as recording his lectures and interviews and these would benefit from being produced in an audiobook format. I’d certainly buy them if they had a decent narrator. The material in this ‘audiobook’ should be seen as a taster of the total work produced by Alan Watts during his lifetime. Don’t let the dreadful quality and complete absence of editing herein discourage you from finding out more about the material generated by this remarkable and visionary man.

Annoying interruptions
Loved Watts' lectures. Hated the section announcements accompanied by that same guitar music. If there could be a version that does not have these interludes, that would be preferable.

Great thought provoking content
Alan has a majestic voice to listen to, for me he’s like listening to David Attenborough, just made for it. I’m not really a spiritual person but this book was a great listen, and provided some really good thought provoking content. Alan explains his theory of cause and effect and the universe, and then goes on to talk about Zen, and finally impermanence. Some of the things he mentions I have picked up on similar messages in other books which is also great
