Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.”

Publisher's Summary
In the thousand-sun network of humanity's expansion, new colony worlds are struggling to find their way. Every new planet lives on a knife-edge between collapse and wonder, and the crew of the aging gunship, Rocinante, have their hands more than full keeping the fragile peace.
In the vast space between Earth and Jupiter, the inner planets and the Belt have formed a tentative and uncertain alliance still haunted by a history of wars and prejudices. On the lost colony world of Laconia, a hidden enemy has a new vision for all of humanity and the power to enforce it. New technologies clash with old as the history of human conflict returns to its ancient pattern of war and subjugation. But human nature is not the only enemy, and the forces being unleashed have their own price. A price that will change the shape of humanity - and of the Rocinante - unexpectedly and forever....

One of the better
This one takes an unexpected turn, but it really solidifies this series as something better. The ideological lines become more solid, and the lines of morality blur. Very interesting, very good to see them shaking things up a little.

Excellent story but a little short
Loved the story and happy to see some fruit coming from the Calibans War storyline - but the ending leaves too many storylines up in the air, some more conclusions would be great.

If you love the show, keen listening.
The Expanse was one of my favourite shows ever. When it ended I was on the fence whether to read the books, knowing there were some minor changes.
Start here, it's not jarring, and well worth your time

Sci-Fi at its best
This was my first book from the series, picked up after watching The Expanse TV show several times.
I was not disappointed or bored at all - the writing was masterful - and the ending ... wow !!!
I'm excited to continue The Expanse story.

Definitely worth the listen but a bit of a slog
I think this is the book in the series for which some fans are going to drop off. I enjoyed the story, but it was a bit of a slog, and I repeatedly thought, if I was reading this, I probably would have stopped by now. the author's can write a lot of things, but they struggle to write compelling antagonists. instead they write villains, and the sections of the book with the villains as viewpoint were especially "sloggiest". they were just too one-dimensional and repetitive to spend so much time with. if I'd had a book, I would've chucked it across the room at points. in this case, I think want to throw my phone. other than that issue, the story is interesting and engaging, and sometimes great. But it doesn't really feel as if momentum builds up to the climax rather than the climax just suddenly begins. and as to my opening sentence, the authors have done an incredible job creating a fictional universe with an attention to detail that makes it logical and believable. this strength however draws attention to how gappy the fiction is in respect to the worlds that are more alien

Just beautiful
The attention to details about the feelings of regular people in the presence of larger than life changes to the universe is just amazing. Its like small stories within larger stories. Loved the details on characters like Amos, Clarissa,..
