Publisher's Summary

Every day, we make decisions on topics ranging from personal investments to schools for our children to the meals we eat to the causes we champion. Unfortunately, we often choose poorly. The reason, the authors explain, is that, being human, we are all susceptible to various biases that can lead us to blunder.

Our mistakes make us poorer and less healthy; we often make bad decisions involving education, personal finance, health care, mortgages and credit cards, the family, and even the planet itself.

Thaler and Sunstein invite us to enter an alternative world, one that takes our humanness as a given. They show that by knowing how people think, we can design choice environments that make it easier for people to choose what is best for themselves, their families, and their society.

Using colorful examples from the most important aspects of life, Thaler and Sunstein demonstrate how thoughtful "choice architecture" can be established to nudge us in beneficial directions without restricting freedom of choice. Nudge offers a unique new take - from neither the left nor the right - on many hot-button issues, for individuals and governments alike. This is one of the most engaging and provocative audiobooks to come along in many years.

Included in this recording are a bonus chapter and a Postscript that was added in the paperback edition.

Possibly the worse audio book I have ever heard

Takes over 11 hours to say almost nothing. Boring content, dry delivery and far from anything that represents a big idea. Could and should have been published as a series of academic papers rather than a book. Behavioural economics and choice making are fascinating areas of study but you would not know it from this book. And the authors fail to recognise the extent to which their areas of focus (health care, 401Ks, etc) are of little relevance to anywhere but the US and much of the meandering complexity they traverse is a result of the political and market perversion of human and social services in the US that they rest of the world has chosen not to follow. Rather than advocating for incremental changes to "choice architecture", why not have the foresight and courage to advocate for public policies that put people, not capital and markets, at the centre? Also fails to go anywhere near OHS where poor choice architecture in risk control systems can have profound human outcomes.

USA centric; the world is beyond

Some chapters only focus on US systems... The concepts of nudging makes sense and often interesting examples used to illustrate points

Highly recommend

I found this book to be fascinating and thought-provoking. The authors, Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, provide numerous examples of how subtle cues often influence people's decisions in their environments and how these nudges can be used to improve outcomes in various areas of life.

As someone who has also read Daniel Kahneman's "Thinking, Fast and Slow", I found that "Nudge" had a similar approach to understanding how people make decisions. However, "Nudge" takes a more practical and applied approach, providing specific examples of how nudges can be used in real-world situations to help people make better decisions.

One of the things I appreciated about "Nudge" was the authors' recognition that people often make decisions that are not in their best interest, despite their best intentions. The book provides practical strategies for designing environments that make it easier for people to make choices that align with their goals and values.

Overall, I highly recommend "Nudge" to anyone interested in understanding how people make decisions and how we can use this knowledge to improve outcomes in areas such as health, wealth, and happiness. If you enjoyed "Thinking, Fast and Slow", you'll likely find "Nudge" to be a valuable complement to your understanding of behavioural economics.

Completely US-centric

All case studies and examples in this book are from the US so may not be directly relatable if you're from another country. I listened to "thinking fast and slow" before this book and the author Daniel Kahneman have mentioned a few of the same studies mentioned in this book
