Publisher's Summary

Among Bali's drug dealers it's the code for a huge cocaine shipment having just landed. For the men who run the country's drug empires, it's time to get rich and party hard. It's snowing in Bali.

Snowing in Bali is the story of the drug trafficking and dealing scene that's made Bali one of the world's most important destinations in the global distribution of narcotics. With its central location to the Asia Pacific market, its thriving tourist industry to act as cover for importation, and a culture of corruption that can easily help law enforcement turn a blind eye, Bali has long been a paradise for traffickers as well as for holiday-makers. Kathryn Bonella, best-selling author of Hotel Kerobokan, has been given extraordinary access into the lives of some of the biggest players in Bali's drug world, both past and present. She charts their rise to incredible wealth and power, and their drug-fuelled lifestyles, filled with orgies, outrageous extravagance and surfing. But running international drug empires in Bali can also be a highly risky business, with terrible consequences for those caught and convicted.

From the highs of multi-million dollar deals to the desperate lows of death row in an Indonesian high security jail, Snowing in Bali is a unique, uncensored insight into a hidden world.

Such interesting stories

Kathryn has really grabbed my attention with her writing style and the stories she is telling.
The stories are mind blowing and the way they are delivered through her writing and the people telling these stories you almost feel apart of it all

Decent listen

Lots of interesting stories within, however they could have been improved by tying them together better to improve flow.

Compelling read (listen)

It had long been recommended to me and perhaps it took the audible version for me to finally commit. A real AirPod battery flattener!

For someone who has frequently visited Bali, there’s an innocence in naivety and it’s kind of earth shattering to learn all this is happening around you. It’s satisfying and disconnecting in equal measure, to retrospectively recall scenes from past visits, piecing together the puzzle.

It’s a must read for anyone who has visited Bali.

Incredible book, thoroughly enjoyed!

The amount of research, talking to all those involved and matching their accounts on a timeline is impressive. It took me back to that era, but with the insight of others living their lives in a different worlds. Not only the reflective of the luxurious lifestyle choices but also the consequences of actions. With a question possibly answered by the end: What is freedom?
The only criticism is I found myself wanting to know when each event actually happened. There are some references to news articles which announce the date, but I would’ve liked some more dates in the actual narrative. As a result I found myself going down my own research rabbit holes. So take off 1/2 a star for that.
All in all: Highly recommended 👍🏼

I'm surprised I finished it

The book relies heavily on shock value especially in the first few chapters. It's written as if English is the second language, I guess that makes it more authentic but I found it annoying most of the time.
