Exposing the many lies told on and off the psychoanalyst's couch, Lying on the Couch gives listeners a tantalizing, almost illicit glimpse at what their therapists might really be thinking during their sessions. Josef Breuer, one of the founding fathers of psychoanalysis, is at the height of his career. Friedrich Nietzsche, Europe's greatest philosopher, is on the brink of suicidal despair, unable to find a cure for the headaches and other ailments that plague him. When he agrees to treat Nietzsche with his experimental "talking cure", Breuer never expects that he, too, will find solace in their sessions. Only through facing his own inner demons can the gifted healer begin to help his patient.

Story
In this best-selling book, one of America's most distinguished psychologists crystallises the great progress that has been made in the development of the techniques and basic philosophy of counselling. Carl Rogers gives a clear exposition of procedures by which individuals who are being counselled may be assisted in achieving for themselves new and more effective personality adjustments. Contemporary psychology derives largely from the experimental laboratory or from Freudian theory. It is preoccupied with minute aspects of animal and human behaviour or with psychopathology.

Story
The difficulty and cost of training psychotherapists properly is well known. It is far easier to provide a series of classes while ignoring the more challenging personal components of training. Despite the fact that the therapist's self-insight and emotional maturity are critical for successful psychotherapy, knowledge and technical skills are the focus of most training programs. As a result, the therapist's personal growth is either marginalized or ignored. The Making of a Therapist counters this trend by offering therapists a personal account of this important inner journey.

Story
Each generation of therapists can boast of only a few writers like Deborah Luepnitz, whose sympathy and wit shine in her fine, luminous prose. In Schopenhauer's Porcupines, she recounts five true stories from her practice, stories of patients who range from the super-rich to the destitute, who grapple with panic attacks, psychosomatic illness, marital despair, and sexual recklessness. Intimate, original, and triumphantly funny, Schopenhauer's Porcupines goes further than any other book in illuminating "how talking helps".

Research suggests that the presence of the therapist, and how the therapist truly forges a connection with the client in therapy, are the most crucial factors affecting the client’s healing process. An engaged, committed, caring therapist who is mindful of his or her own self - and how that self relates to the client - is the key determinant of how well that client will respond to therapy.

Great book. Awful reader.

Publisher's Summary
The collection of 10 absorbing tales by master psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom uncovers the mysteries, frustrations, pathos, and humor at the heart of the therapeutic encounter. In recounting his patients' dilemmas, Yalom not only gives us a rare and enthralling glimpse into their personal desires and motivations but also tells us his own story as he struggles to reconcile his all-too-human responses with his sensibility as a psychiatrist. Not since Freud has an author done so much to clarify what goes on between a psychotherapist and a patient.
The audio version of the book includes an exclusive interview with Dr. Yalom.

Utterly, excruciatingly boring.
I’m a clinical psychotherapist and trauma specialist - this book was recommended by a colleague.
It’s about counter-transference. A whole book about it. Not one chapter about 8 pages long, no….an entire book.
Don’t do it.

Powerful and immersive storytelling
This book consists of a number of powerful and immersive stories told eliquently. It's not a book to listen to while cooking, but rather one to truly pay full attention to. Once you do, you'll be transformed to the patients' world and then the therapist's. Furthermore, you'll hear insights to apply to your own life, either as a therapist, friend or human being living a complex life. It truly is a noteworthy book that might just provide priceless insight and reflection into your own life.

Great for a trainee counselling
As a trainee counsellor, I’m really enjoying Dr Yalom’s stories and they are a real insight if you are delving into the work done by psychologists and psychotherapists. The narrration isn’t as bad as some people on here suggest it is, although I do admit it is a little mechanical at times and there probably needs to be more of a short pause in between each chapter. Really enjoying it though, and it has more than met my expectations

very bad narrator
so far the worst Audible book I've listened to. The narrator was so monotonous and robotic couldn't tell the difference between characters and constantly losing the story line.
The book itself has amazing content though just misrepresented by the narrator.
