Publisher's Summary

In the early 1930s, Nancy Wake was a young woman enjoying a bohemian life in Paris. By the end of the Second World War, she was the Gestapo's most wanted person. As a naive, young journalist, Nancy Wake witnessed a horrific scene of Nazi violence in a Viennese street. From that moment, she declared that she would do everything in her power to rid Europe of the Nazis.

What began as a courier job here and there became a highly successful escape network for Allied soldiers, perfectly camouflaged by Nancy's high-society life in Marseille. Her network was soon so successful – and so notorious – that she was forced to flee France to escape the Gestapo, who had dubbed her 'the white mouse' for her knack of slipping through its traps. But Nancy was a passionate enemy of the Nazis and refused to stay away.

Supplying weapons and training members of a powerful underground fighting force, organising Allied parachute drops, cycling four hundred kilometres across a mountain range to find a new transmitting radio – nothing seemed too difficult in her fight against the Nazis. Peter FitzSimons reveals Nancy Wake's compelling story, a tale of an ordinary woman doing extraordinary things.

Cracking story

Narrator doesn't match how a Peter Fitzsimons book goes in my head. Story is fabulous though.

What a cracking story!

Any additional comments?

Such a well told story combining Nancy's life, the history of war and close encounters. Stephanie Daniels French and German sounded really authentic and added to the scenes. I was hooked from beginning to end. Highly recommend this audible book!

An incredible story

Nancy Wake’s story almost defies belief. What an amazing, gutsy woman she was. This story had me hooked from a few minutes in. The narration was a little tiresome at times with some words repeated three times for what purpose I wasn’t sure?! (I didn’t feel like it added to the story telling at all). Overall an amazing story of one truly heroic woman.

A wonderful story of a true war heroine.

This is a fabulous story of a wonderful Australian. This should be on our English reading list for our high schools if it isn't already. It's one of those books that you can't stop thinking about for a very long time after it's finished. You feel sad at the end that the story is over and how can you give yourself to another book straight away when you are still so emotionally involved with this journey. One of my favorite stories.

The White Mouse

People like Nancy are few and far between. FitzSimons captures her spunk and spirit well. A true heroine.

Extraordinary. 🐭 #TheWhiteMouse

This book that documents the incredible life of the hugely brave, beautiful & bold Nancy Wake who’s story is humbling beyond words and fills me with deep gratitude for the many things I take for granted as a young Australian who’s never known anything but peace is one of my new favourites as it is very vital. Highly recommended.

Nancy Wake the White Mouse

Peter FitzSimmons is a great story teller and researcher bringing to life the characters in his book. As a matter of fact his books never disappoint.
I shook my head in wonder to discover how Nancy could be her 'own woman'; rebel; socialite; leader among men; opportunistic; compassionate; ruthless and yet display that wonderful Australian larrikinism.
I thought the narrator Stephanie Daniel was superb particularly her various inflections and pronunciation of foreign names. Nancy Wake was a page turner for me and it saddened me to see her non recognition from the Australian Government. Quite possibly the war could've taken a different route without her!
