Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of My Name Is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout, read by Kimberly Farr.

A mother comes to visit her daughter in hospital after having not seen her in many years. Her unexpected visit forces Lucy to confront her past, uncovering long-buried memories of a profoundly impoverished childhood, and her present, as the façade of her new life in New York begins to crumble, awakening her to the reality of her faltering marriage and her unsteady journey towards becoming a writer.

From Lucy's hospital bed, we are drawn ever more deeply into the emotional complexity of family life, the inescapable power of the past and the memories - however painful - that bind a family together.

Brilliant book and brilliant performance

Elizabeth Stroud has written an intimate book with such strength that it will stay with me for many years. I'm am already on to Olive Kitteridge.

Four Hours Lost

I’m left wondering if the synopsis was accidentally published as a novel. It’s like ordering a jumper online and then receiving wool, knitting needles and a photo of the finished product. The rest is DIY without a pattern.

Couldn't fault it!!

The performer was just perfect for this. I loved everything about it except it was too short. I could have happily kept listening for many many more hours!!

Uneventful and disappointing

Well narrated in a deadpan way while ringing true to the rather boring characters this mundane story plodded from start to finish. I wonder how this series of novels have achieved such wide acclaim and readership? I regret the hours I spent waiting for some revelation . It was frankly a disappointment from start to finish.

I preferred the Oh William and then Lucy by the Sea. Absolutely would enjoy other novels by Elizabeth Strout

Good, but not as good as Olive books.

I enjoyed this book for the most part. Short and well written with astute character analysis, but after falling in love with Olive Kettering and Olive Again this book dimmed a little bit. I felt I didn't really know Lucy so well by the end. Oh, William, which I will be reading might shed some light.

Beautifully rich

Allusive, magical, deeply felt prose. Plain spoken, seemingly no-nonsense words, spoken squarely pull the heart out of you.

Beautiful writing..

So easy to listen to and absorb. The narration added substance to this internal story. I understood the character's wistful and opaque memories both sad and unforgettable. I am very glad I have read this book. It is on my favourites list.
