Publisher's Summary

Miss Pettigrew is a down-on-her-luck, middle-aged governess sent by her employment agency to work for a nightclub singer rather than a household of unruly children. Over a period of 24 hours, as she becomes caught up in the life of Delysia LaFloss, her own life is changed - forever.

This charming, funny, light-hearted 1938 novel was a bestseller on its first appearance. Read by Academy Award winning actress Frances McDormand, who stars in the 2008 film as Miss Pettigrew.

Winifred Watson grew up in Newcastle and was a secretary until, in 1935, she married Leslie Pickering, the manager of a timber firm. She wrote six novels in all and died in 2002.

My go to comfort read !

A typical portrayal of lives going nowhere then accidentally meshing into new ways of being. All characters give to each other insights into enriching and indeed changing directions in each other’s lives for the ultimate better!
An optimistic book when optimism was so needed !
So it is for now as we battle and emerge from a world pandemic we need to take stock, take on difference accept and forge ahead with courage and do and live better.
Sorry to preach this was meant to be a book review not a sermon but it’s the richness and pure simpleness of this story that gives us real hope
Give it a go and immerse yourself in the times the people and find yourself there too! Which character are you ?
Who would you like to be?
What would happen next ?
This is a real feminist book without the dull preachiness of modern novelists. I don’t read modern novels now I read books like this and I’m better for it! No swearing no apology for who they are no PC just pure well written plot humour and hope.

A Treasure.

Loved it... 1930s Cinderella for the over 40, done with dash and humour. A keeper - which I'll be listening to many times.

Unexpected

Unexpectedly delightful story. An excellent light and funny distraction. Had you cheering for the main character by the end.
