Publisher's Summary

In this town, danger moves to a steamy Latin beat.
SFPD detective Gabriel Sandalini might as well have put a gun to his own head. One red-hot sexual encounter in a bar's back room has put two years of deep undercover work in jeopardy - two years of danger and deception as he worked his way into crime boss Ricco Botelli's inner circle. Gabriel can't afford emotional entanglements. Hell, he can't afford emotions. But that was before he had a name to pin on that anonymous one-off-Miguel Ortega.
Miguel Ortega doesn't trust anyone, but tough, street-smart Gabriel brings out the conquistador in his Spanish blood. But distractions are nothing short of deadly right now, not with his boss's impending marriage to Botelli's sister, which will ensure peace - and massive drug profits - for both families.
On a trip to Mexico to set up drug supply lines, a violent confrontation proves they've got each other's backs - to a degree.
Then one savage act changes everything, testing not only their fragile bond, but Gabriel's will to live.

Josh Lanyon was NOT INVOLVED in making this audio!

I first read Mexican Heat many years ago shortly after finding Josh Lanyon books and after discovering how very much I love Josh's writing. I wolfed down and enjoyed also this book back then.

During the years I've had pleasure of listening to numerous excellent Josh Lanyon audio books, because Josh always makes sure her readers will get the best possible listening experience. Josh always picks her narrators with extra care.

So... do you see where I'm heading?

The narration, the performance of this book is bad. Very bad. Unprofessional and poor. Something a Josh Lanyon book never is. The explanation for this mess is as simple as this:

JOSH LANYON DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS AUDIO PRODUCTION.

So, let's not blame Josh for this. Instead, let's enjoy her own, wonderful audio books. There are so many to choose from!

Narration so bad I did not finish it

This is an excellent story that has deserved several re-reads, and I was looking forward to the audible version. However, not only is the reader unskilled in narrating anything with words greater than three syllables and occasionally in a foreign language, the production itself is DEFECTIVE.

Holden Madagame lacks the skill to read aloud in English, let alone manage Spanish names and place names (it took him several chapters to discover "Don" is an honorific title in Spanish and NOT a first name). I am paying to listen to him and expect any narrator worth his salt can acquire the correct pronunciation of a few foreign words. This is apparently expecting too much, however, as he mangles pronunciation of English as well (example, "yeoman" he pronounces to rhyme with the country "Yemen".

I could excuse a handful of mispronounced words in a book, but this "performance" contains so many it completely distracted me from the story, and I could not finish it. Also he cannot read a sentence longer than five words without stumbling. In Audible chapter 10, in which the characters are engaged in a game called "Espera", we hear Madagame stumbling through re-reads of almost every other sentence because he has omitted words or otherwise ruined the sentence. And Audible.com has neglected to edit out these DEFECTIVE passages! So you get stops and starts for the entire chapter 10, and sprinkled intermittently throughout the other first 10 chapters (I stopped listening after 10.)

After researching the narrator's other Audible.com works and finding that limited to a handful of porn and sex manuals, I can only conclude there were so many errors in chapter 10 because he was reading one-handed.

This is the poorest, most sophomoric attempt at narration I have ever encountered on Audible.com, and it ruined an excellent story by well-known authors in this genre. I cannot recommend anyone purchase this narration. I could not recommend it even if it were free.
