Critic Reviews

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)

Pretty good

This covers some of the basics of chit chat you might engage in, but I feel it might be better if we had started with more useful scenarios. E.g. The first barrier I had in China was learning to order food. It also seemed that the Chinese expected you to know numbers even if you didn't speak much mandarin so it's a shame that wasn't covered in this section, though I expect it will follow soon. It's also annoying when they teach you to say "I'm American" over and over when I still don't know how to say "Australian".

That said, I feel a definite sense of accomplishment having finished this set and I'm enjoying the pimsleur learning method.

Terrible

What would have made Chinese (Mandarin) Level 1 Lessons 1-5 better?

This would have been a great product if it included some written reference material, not just an overview of the author

Has Chinese (Mandarin) Level 1 Lessons 1-5 put you off other books in this genre?

No

What didn’t you like about Pimsleur’s performance?

The purchase states reference guides are provided, there is nothing but an introductory piece on the author

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I was angry and disappointed that I wasted my money on two parts to this series after hearing fantastic things about it, what a waste

Good and easy to learn

the method is repetitive but is effective in teaching tones and words. Just wish that there is more lessons in one book though.

good and fun way to learn

Really enjoyable way to learn Chinese. Good to do in the car while driving. Having a small knowledge of Chinese already has helped. But could easily learn with zero knowledge.
