Publisher's Summary

In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. His body - along with a camera with five rolls of film, an SOS note, and a cryptic diary written in the back pages of a book about edible plants - was found six months later by a hunter.

Wonderful

I first read this book as a twenty something facing an existential crisis. Jon succinctly details the true story of a youths perilous wanderlust with tales of his own. A breathtaking and heartbreaking true story. I’ve always felt quite connected to the spirit of Chris. I hope wherever he is, he is roaming mountains and is content. A truly eye opening book, one most suited for the young ones trying to find what makes themselves themselves.

Inspiring and real

I heard about In to the Wild while listening to an introduction on Deer Stalking.. I was curious by what would have had to be going through the young mans mind to want to go out there on his own. I feel I have had very similar views to Chris and it’s such a shame he is joe gone. I want to thank Jon Krakauer for writing this book it has been such a good listen. Narrated well by Phillip easy to listen.

This is an amazingly written book, the story is fantastic and you get easily lost in Chris’ adventures. Would listen too again 100%.

Boring in the extreme!

A tedious listen! Storytelling about folk that took extreme risks with no thought to how their poor families would feel, should they perish.
I always get mad when there are emergency personnel risking their own lives for these selfish people.
A rubbish book

Terrible story of a selfish kid.

This story is not inspirational at all! In fact we should be exposing this guys heartless, hypocritical...even narcissistic tendencies.
I hope teens can learn from his mistakes, not so much be inspired by his suicidal wanderlust.

So good

Loved it so much that I also listened to his other book “into thin air” and loved that too! Great story and so interesting, all the other snippets about other wacky folk who “go bush.”

Spoiled college kid learns the hard way...

I understand why someone would want to do what this kid did. But in his case, Chris McCandless was naive, unprepared and ultimately became a parasitic burden to everyone he came across as a result.

He was clearly mentally ill and couldn't even commit to any of the beliefs he preached, especially those on money.
His sheer hypocrisy, arrogance and cluelessness was just painful to tolerate.
His end comes as no surprise.

Thought provoking

A great overview of a tragedy but with thoughtful and considered insights into the mind of a young adventurous man

Fascinating True Story

This is a fascinating story and it is well told here. I watched the film first and it inspires me to want to read the book. The film follows the real story very closely.

An interesting young man who made some individual and ultimately tragic decisions. Worth a listen.

I have had a happy life

I don’t know why it took me until now to read this book. But I’m glad I finally did.
