Publisher's Summary

"Most people think of love as a feeling," says David Richo, "but love is not so much a feeling as a way of being present." In this audiobook, Richo offers a fresh perspective on love and relationships - one that focuses not on finding an ideal mate, but on becoming a more loving and realistic person. Drawing on the Buddhist concept of mindfulness, How to Be an Adult in Relationships explores five hallmarks of mindful loving and how they play a key role in our relationships throughout life:

  1. Attention to the present moment; observing, listening, and noticing all the feelings at play in our relationships
  2. Acceptance of ourselves and others just as we are
  3. Appreciation of all our gifts, our limits, our longings, and our poignant human predicament
  4. Affection shown through holding and touching in respectful ways
  5. Allowing life and love to be just as they are, with all their ecstasy and ache, without trying to take control

When deeply understood and applied, these five simple concepts - what Richo calls the five A's - form the basis of mature love. They help us to move away from judgment, fear, and blame to a position of openness, compassion, and realism about life and relationships. By giving and receiving these five A's, relationships become deeper and more meaningful, and they become a ground for personal transformation.

Informed and compassionate

A beautiful book that clearly shows the nature of the human and how we might best move with compassion, confidence and acceptance in an often difficult world.

I absolutely love this book!

I love the wisdom in all the words presented in this work. It really spoke to me even when Ilistened to it months apart. I listened to some chapters several times to embrace the ideas. The author's voice is hypnotic and soothing. All time favourite. Thank you!

Valuable read on understanding Adulting

The content was informative though a little ethereal at times. The concepts foundational for understanding the qualities and attitudes of a healthy adult in an adult to adult relationship.

There was insight in where gaps in out adult perspective may show up. Worth considering when seeking to improve our relationships with others.

Worth listening to.

Remarkable read on self discovery!

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Eye-opening, evokes emotions of compassion, vulnerability, love, kindness. Taps into your triggers and traumas and assists in better understanding how to navigate with them! Beautiful read.

Not for me

Too much focus on methods, theories & psychological stereotypes for me, rather than real wisdoms. These things eventually go out of style. Boring, cumbersome & finally I gave up listening after half way. Been attempting to force myself to finish this book for many months, as I don’t easily give up on a book, but life is too short & this is not for me.

archaic views of what constitutes a family

I tried to at least sift through to glean some tools and insights. after 2 chapters, I realised that the grating heteronormative views permeates everything. from selective research to quotes from people who lived centuries ago. all only to reinforce preconceived views. hardly qualifies as providing tools to cope with present struggles.
