The volume brings together the most important and influential aspects of Ian Kershaw’s research on the Holocaust for the first time. To an extraordinary extent we continue to live in the shadow of the classical world. At every level, from languages to calendars to political systems, we are the descendants of a “classical Europe,” using frames of reference created by ancient Mediterranean cultures. As this consistently fresh and surprising new audio book makes clear, however, this was no less true for the inhabitants of those classical civilizations themselves, whose myths, history, and buildings were an elaborate engagement with an already old and revered past - one filled with great leaders and writers....

Story
This essential biography, by the author most deeply familiar with the vast archives of the Soviet era, offers an unprecedented, fine-grained portrait of Stalin, the man and dictator. Without mythologizing Stalin as either benevolent or an evil genius, Khlevniuk resolves numerous controversies about specific events in the dictator's life while assembling many hundreds of previously unknown letters, memos, reports, and diaries into a comprehensive, compelling narrative of a life that altered the course of world history.

No surprises here but an insight into the man

Publisher's Summary
Hailed as the most compelling biography of the German dictator yet written, Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the heart of its subject's immense darkness.
From his illegitimate birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in the 20th century.
Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the character of the bizarre misfit in his 30-year ascent from a Viennese shelter for the indigent to uncontested rule over the German nation that had tried and rejected democracy in the crippling aftermath of World War I. With extraordinary vividness, Kershaw recreates the settings that made Hitler's rise possible: the virulent anti-Semitism of prewar Vienna, the crucible of a war with immense casualties, the toxic nationalism that gripped Bavaria in the 1920s, the undermining of the Weimar Republic by extremists of the Right and the Left and the hysteria that accompanied Hitler's seizure of power in 1933 and then mounted in brutal attacks by his storm troopers on Jews and others condemned as enemies of the Aryan race.
In an account drawing on many previously untapped sources, Hitler metamorphoses from an obscure fantasist, a "drummer" sounding an insistent beat of hatred in Munich beer halls, to the instigator of an infamous failed putsch and, ultimately, to the leadership of a ragtag alliance of right-wing parties fused into a movement that enthralled the German people.

Excellent, life saver
I love this book. I was given a hard copy for my 21st two years ago. But having ADHD I struggled with a large book, not matter how much I tried I never finished it. And I dropped the book on my face. That was harsh. Audible, once again to the rescue!!!
Ian Kersaw's approach to this extremely sensitive subject is so fascinating and really helped me pull together the information I've learned in the decade I've been studying aspects of WWII.
The narrator is fabulous. His voice when quoting my other favourite WWII writer William Shirer was absolutely hilarious. Considering how sassy Mr Shirer could be. The narrator also really did well with the flow of the information in almost a conversational fashion. Which I enjoyed.
I would definitely recommend this audio book to the other wannabe historians out there.

Shudderling Brilliant and Horific
Listening to the written in conjunction with Audible version left me thinking how evil lurks just below the so called veneer of civilization. I am yet to read a biography of Stalin, but stand ready to be shocked even more. Despite the fact that there have been no global wars since WW2 other atrocities in other parts of the world and, in the name of bestiality and religion, should remind everyone that the Hitler Event will happen again. The human race has much to be feared.

Understanding Hitler's rise and fall
A justifiably very detailed look at the rise of Hitler and his fall and the circumstances that allowed him to become the dictator of Germany. The detail yields rich rewards in bringing a deep understanding of Hitler - the gambler, the "prophet", the dangers of narcissistic self-belief - and his key henchmen and how Germany's recent past gave rise to the unique circumstances that allowed his rise to ultimate power. Highly recommended.

Well researched and organised
Chronicling the life of such a calamitous and controversial individual such as Adolf Hitler, is no easy task. Doing it on such a way that balances what is relevant with the colossal information that is available adds another layer of difficulty. Having read and listened to multiple biographies of Hitler, Kershaw’s is by far the most organised yet precise account of Hitlers life. Although, the Audiobook version of his biography is somewhat shortened and removes many of the personal accounts from eyewitness accounts, it still manages to balance an in-depth yet appropriate amount of information in every chapter. For more organised yet less comprehensive biography I would highly recommend Kershaw’s. For a more in-depth yet lengthier account, I would recommend Volker Ulrich’s “Hitler “.
