Publisher's Summary

On 25 April 1915, Allied forces landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in present-day Turkey to secure the sea route between Britain and France in the west and Russia in the east. After eight months of terrible fighting, they would fail.

Turkey regards the victory to this day as a defining moment in its history, a heroic last stand in the defence of the nation's Ottoman Empire. But, counter-intuitively, it would signify something perhaps even greater for the defeated Australians and New Zealanders involved: the birth of their countries' sense of nationhood.

Now approaching its centenary, the Gallipoli campaign, commemorated each year on Anzac Day, reverberates with importance as the origin and symbol of Australian and New Zealand identity. As such, the facts of the battle – which was minor against the scale of the First World War and cost less than a sixth of the Australian deaths on the Western Front – are often forgotten or obscured. Peter FitzSimons, with his trademark vibrancy and expert melding of writing and research, recreates the disaster as experienced by those who endured it or perished in the attempt.

A must read for anyone and everyone

I loved this book and would recommend that everyone read it. FitzSimons has created an engaging and in some aspects haunting novelization of the Gallipoli campaign that explores both sides of the conflict. It is a read that will stay with me for many years to come, and I cannot stress enough what you will gain from taking to time to read (or listen to) it also.

Essential reading for every Australian.

Every Australian, young and old alike, needs to experience this tragic but triumphant piece and Australian history.

So much young Australian blood spilt on foreign land should never be forgotten and never allowed to happen again.

ANZAC day has always been special but I don't think that after learning the facts in depth I will ever be able to thank those Australian heroes enough.

Lest we forget.

Brilliantly written and performed

Obviously an enormous amount of work went into this book and the result is a very detailed account of a military disaster.
I was left with enormous admiration for the men who were sacrificed for, in the end, nothing.
I was also left with anger at the callous incompetence of senior officers who used the same disastrous tactics over and over again.
All Australians and New Zealanders should read this book.

Gut wrenching

At times this was hard to listen to but even harder to stop. Heart breaking and gut wrenching - unbelievable bravery, stoicism and determination from our ANZAC forces. I'm so proud to be an Aussie.

A gripping account - a big book full of detail.

Having had a Great Uncle who fought at Gallipoli in the ANZACS, I only wish I had been able to listen to this book before I did my Kiwi pilgrimage to the sites mentioned in the book. Very moving as it was. Well written and pulls no punches as to where the blame lay.
