Publisher's Summary

This magnificent biography of Henry VIII is set against the cultural, social and political background of his court - the most spectacular court ever seen in England - and the splendour of his many sumptuous palaces. An entertaining narrative packed with colourful description and a wealth of anecdotal evidence but also a comprehensive analytical study of the development of both monarch and court during a crucial period in English history. As well as challenging some recent theories, it offers controversial new conclusions based on contemporary evidence that has until now been overlooked. This is a triumph of historical writing which will appeal equally to the general listener and the serious historian.

Entertaining and factual

An interesting listen providing real sources rather than historical dramatisation. Another good Alison Weir book.

Riveting

I enjoyed this meticulously researched and riveting story of King Henry VIII. It revealed the complexity of the politics, the court life and the power struggles at every level. It gave me a clearer understanding of this part of English history.

Brilliant insight

Catching up on history which shaped the present. I wonder if Henry was a Type 2 diabetic???

Historical research at its best

I listened to this non fiction work following my second audio "reading" of Hilary Mantell's Wolf Hall trilogy.
I found Weir's scholarly work (supported by Phyllida Nashs's excellent narration) to be a very informative balance to Mantell's recreation of the Tudor Court, its intrigues and tragedies. I will listen to this (Weir's book) again, and that is high praise from me.

History just got interesting

I loved listening to this and it’s awakened a real interest in history for me. Very well narrated, I found that the characters came to life in the detail of their daily lives. More please.

History brought to life!

This was an excellent book to listen to. Hearing the historical accounts brought to life with a modern monetary comparison made this an excellent read!

History with detail and a sense of the man.

One of our greatest historical writers with appropriate narration from Phyllida Nash. Whether one agrees with her conclusions, however, is to be debated. Certainly I would not wish to have been a friend.

Fantastic

I highly recommend this book. The most detailed account of Henry the Eighth's reign I have read. The performance was also exceptional. If you're a Tudor addict like me, this is a must.
